Replacing a hammer + valve with a solenoid, is it possible?

Is it possible to replace the valve and hammer assebly with a 2 way solenoid, or would that be way too slow? A paintball leaves the barrel in 3-4.5ms. A standard pulse operation 2 way solenoid can energise in 15ms and deenergise in 5ms. If it isn't fast enough, air would be flowing out valve after the paintball has left the barrel. Would a solenoid work? I have not tested any solenoids so far, but I would like to know if it can be used or not.

I have noticed that in the SP Impulse a solenoid pushes a hammer up against the valve which releases the gas that fires the paintball. I would like to skip the hammer and have either a regular solenoid, or a 2 way solenoid (high flow) do the job of the hammer and valve.

I'm not to sure about the timing question, but something I've considered was have the solenoid trip a lever and close an on off valve, (similar to the mag On/Off.) and release the piece that seals the valve. I honestly coulnd't tell you. Maybe a (slightly ) smarter person could.

Thats what a 2 way solenoid does :)

On the impulse (as I understand from the animations) this is what happens (I'm only going to deal with the lower tube now); The solenoid holds the hammer back, when the 4 way (donno what it uses) is actutated, it slams the hammer forward onto the valve. Now that noid is moving a pretty big chunk of metal and the pressure (I assume, since imps can chop like mad) is pretty big. So big that I doubt the valve can push back on it. When the 4 way pressure is reversed, it pulls the hammer back.

This leads me to believe that a soleniod can controll a ram, which controlls the valve. I would like to know for sure, if a solenoid can be used to controll the dwell at 3ms or below. I might not use a 2 way solenoid dirrectly (flow issues) to act as a vavle, but only if I know that a ram and 4 way noid can take its place.

Getting a solenoid strong enough to hold and release the amount of pressure and volume required to fire a paintball would be fairly large and expensive. Plus, it would take a lot of battery power to operate. Even the large emag battery and solenoid only shuts off a small airway (on/off) and pulls a sear out of the way.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.

They do make air operated valves. You use a small solenoid valve to send air to the bigger valve, which controls a higher volume and pressure. If you do manage to get something like this working, the next step is to get the bolt open and closed, or rig up a trapdoor to isolate a ball in the breech before firing.
