I just got the e-mail from the commanding officer of my NROTC unit. Until 5 minutes ago I was a college program Midshipman with no clearance and no official membership in the Navy. I have been informed that I have now been picked up for the Navy scholarship and am officially a Midshipman 3rd class in the US Navy. I am elated AO. I can't wait to get out there and get myself on a tin can. The 3 years I have left in college are just stepping stones to the adventure that awaits me. All my brothers and sisters here who are serving, I can't wait to join you and make you proud. Here I come fellow squids!
In the Navy...

Exactly, I'm thinking cruisers or destroyers. I don't know about frgates lol.Originally posted by krugerCongrats!!!! If you have a choice, then go for a bigger ship, not a carrier tho. Those are too big.Comment

I personally would also go for overseas stations.... I loved my time over in Asia. Of course I was on the FlagShip of the Seventh Fleet.... so we hit plenty o ports and had a crapload of parties... It's not all a cakewalk but it's doable.

Stay away from Frigates, WAAAAAAAY too small. Sure, you get to know your crew very well, there isn't much of a crew to learn. You also get noticed for everything you do, you get to do a lot on a frigate (remember, not many crew members on board). And, one more thing, the damn things are small. Even little waves from a Cruiser will slam a Frigate around. If you have a choice, one of the newer classes of Destroyer would be the best, Spruance or Arleigh Burke class. And, unless you are ready to do massive amounts of cleaning and spit an polish, stay away from the Cruisers. They are very high profile ships. When cruisers are on war maneuvers, they go against entire battle groups, alone.WOW, sigs. Havent seen these in a while here on AO.Comment

Huh. I don't think we use Spruance class anymore. The new destroyers coming out are the DDG-1000's. But yeah a destroyer would be choice. I like how you can focus on one specific job on a larger ship whereas on a Frigate or LCS you'd be handling 2-3 jobs.Originally posted by krugerStay away from Frigates, WAAAAAAAY too small. My dream job would be working as a division officer for the gun boss. That would be sweet to start out with.Comment

I got out of the Navy a couple years ago, I'm pretty sure the Spru-cans are all gone, I know a few Bur-cans are still under construction. Otherwise I know the Zumwalt class is up next, don't know if they've begun construction yet or not though.Die Screaming

Shows you how much I keep up with the Navy. I was on a Spruance class, DD970 Caron. The Burke's were just commin' out when I got out.

And your thinking on this is backwards, on the smaller ships, you get tagged with covering extra areas. On the larger ships, they have the people to cover everything. I was meaning that with a mid sized ship, you get to know the crew, by name. You dont get that on a carrier. At sea and underway, carriers have over 5k on board. Admirals love being on carriers, so things are usually a little more uptight than on the smaller ships. Same goes for the Cruisers, Admirals like those too. Destroyers and below, no self respecting Admiral would be caught dead on one of those, so things are a little more relaxed on those. This is just my experience, but I was enlisted. As an officer, and THE junior one, you get to do everything that nobody wants to do. Dont take it to heart tho, every officer has to go thru this, its just the way that it is.WOW, sigs.
