internet service questions (wireless cards and home service)

Ok so Im moving soon and Im checking out the internet services in the area that I am moving to and I have a few questions since Im not the most tech savvy person.

First off

They say the fastest connection I can get is 3meg DSL, is this fast enough to watch videos(without waiting 10 minutes for a 2 minute vid) and play online games w/out a ton of lag or dropping the game? (I don't know,but I liek to have the option)


Now they also have 5meg...or there site say they do,they didn't mention it when I talked to them...so I guess if 3meg won't cut it how about 5meg?


I have Road Runner cable internet now..so anyone know how either of these will compare?(I don't know what my connection speed is all i know is it's cable and it is the home version..)




Ok next question...


Anyone have any exp with these wireless cards that cellular phone services are now offering?


I think most of them offer faster connection then those listed above,my other concern with them is how well is the connection? Can it be a spotty like a cell phone?



Also is it possible to use one of these cards to play xbox live...I would think I could use my laptop as a router? Maybe I am way off.


Basically the main things I will being using the Internet for is Watching videos (mainly midget porn ),maybe some online games, and research..also I plan getting xbox live so I don't know if that can drag down the connection..

3Meg should be fine, although 5 is always better if you have the extra cash. 3 Meg should be more than up to snuff though.

IDK what Road Runner is. I assume it is just an ISP? It would depend on your current connection speed.

It was fine in my very limited experience. They are more expensive IIRC. And there are licensing issues with you only being able to have the software on, and run the card on, only one machine at a time (at least with the card I have limited experience with).

Also is it possible to use one of these cards to play xbox live...I would think I could use my laptop as a router? Maybe I am way off.

Not that I am aware of, but it may be possible if you use a crossover cable with the appropriate connectors. Which does the X-Box use? Last console I got was a PS1

You'll be fine on 3Mbit connection, the highest bit rate you'll deal with for video is 768kbyte. As far as gaming goes, most games are still written for the least common denominator in mind when it comes to bandwidth and latency, which is a 56k modem.

They're spotty like a cell phone, and so laggy that you'd be nutz for gaming with one. The connection will also not be faster than any land based service. Check the terms of service as well, some providers limit what you can do with the service.

Most connection cards depend on the carrier.

The cards we offer through Sprint are what we call EVDO Rev A.. They offer broadband type upload and download speeds IF you have strong DIGITAL coverage. Just like you cell phone.. Good coverage, it will work great.. Spotty coverage, you won't be happy.

Well I figured if the connection was slower I'm better off with midget porn anyway, see if my hypothesis is correct then midget porn would use less space since the people performing in the videos are smaller.

the reason they offer 3meg download and a much smaller upload is so people can't share an internet connection over many connections. like over a block.don't worry too much if sharing it over 4 computers. i currenlty have what i think is 6megs and i'm sharing it with 5 computers and my xbox. and most of the connections are wireless, only the desktop for gaming is connected and the xbox. i don't have too much issue with lag.

if your laptop is running XP and has 2 ethernet ports you can choose to connect one of them to the router or modem and the other to the xbox via a crossover cable, or if you don't wanna buy another cable there aer little $7 attachments that do the same thing. it's easy to do, go to my network places, setup a home or office network, ok, ok , enter yadda, (btw i just ran thru the wizard and didn't even pay attention to what they were asking) choose the ethernet port to use (make sure call cables are connected before this, may need to have the xbox turned on also), then choose "this computer connects directly to internets, share connections with others" and you should be set to go.

if you only have one ethernet on your laptop, well you are sol, unless you get a router or hub. wireless routers are cheaper than wired ones? at least according to bestbuy.com. wow.
and now, to setup this, first make sure internets work when directly connected to computer. if it does turn off the computer, or not, doesn't really matter. plug one cable into laptop, one into xbox, and the cable from the modem goes into a separate plug, it's apart from the other 4 or so. then plug in the power cable for router. at this point it SHOULD automatily set itself up. most routers do this, the one i got 2 years ago does this and it's a crappy linksys.

There are really two reasons for capping upload speed:

1) To keep people from running services like web servers and email out of their home, forcing them to more expensive business plans with higher upload speeds.
2) Technically, a home user doesn't need near the same upload speed as download. The amount of outbound data that you send when requesting a web page is minuscule compared to the amount of data you download.
