But it's no longer the Cold War.
We arent fighting a godless enemy.
Umm, most of the cold war communists were Catholic, so umm, they were not godless. Now...the folks we are fighting over in Iraq, they are godless.

According to the 1977 constitution, Soviet citizens were guaranteed the "right to profess or not to profess any religion." Atheism was a fundamental tenet of Communist ideology, however, and suppression of religion was an explicit government policy during the Communist period. The old Russian Empire contained peoples of many major religious faiths, including many denominations. In 1918 the property of all religious faiths and denominations as well was nationalized. Although the Soviet government permitted some churches, mosques, synagogues, and temples to function, all religious instruction was restricted until 1990, when a law was passed forbidding the government to interfere with religious activities.

The government issues no statistics on religious affiliation; rough estimates suggest that about half the total Soviet population adhered to some religious faith. The largest number, mostly Slavs, adhered to Russian Orthodox Christianity (Orthodox Church), which was adopted by the Eastern Slavs from the neighboring Byzantine Empire in the 10th century. Smaller numbers of Roman Catholics lived in the western portion of Ukraine and Belorussia, which had historically been linked with the Polish-Lithuanian Empire. Because of its historical and cultural associations, Roman Catholicism is particularly strong in Lithuania. Lutheranism was more prevalent among the Karelians in the northern Baltic region, the faith having historically been adopted from Scandinavia and Germany. The Georgian Orthodox church is dominant among Georgians, and the Gregorian church among Armenians; both churches were established in the Transcaucasus region in early Christian times. The Jewish population, which was concentrated in the country's major cities, numbered about 1.8 million in the 1980s, but the total declined rapidly because of emigration. Muslims formed the second largest religious group in the Soviet Union, numbering at least 34 million adherents. Most of the Turkic peoples of Central Asian USSR traditionally adhered to Islam.

I was actually surprised. I expected (knew) the Orthodox church to be the main tenant, but was surprised by the amount of diversity.

Who sang the National Anthem? I started watching right as they kicked off and stopped at halftime. Always glad the Colts won, though.

Now if you really want to Try and insult me, come up with something better than that. I would expect more from someone with 6k+ posts, how pathetic

Back on topic, I too hate when folks soul train out the NA. This coming from a man that spent his High school and college life singing. Not very often you have someone All State in football and Choir

                    haha, an AO coup.......hm......
sorry, that's what i got from that.

i also hate all the vibrato these "singers" add to the National Anthem. it makes it hard to listen to. when i go to a ball game it makes me physically ill listening to it.

holy crap. i decided to try and google for "worst sung national anthem" and i found the rosanne barr rendition. i listened to all of 1 second (no joke, paused it at 57 seconds remaining, total time is 58 seconds) and i had a bowel movement.

Never heard of her. I do agree with what's being said in this thread though. When I was at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Gay Men's Choir sang the National Anthem, and did a wonderful job. When I went to Busch stadium, the first time was some R&B singer person, who didn't do a good job at all, but the second, it was a local barber shop octet, who did a very good job on it.

The National Anthem represents America, land of the free home of the brave. If the singer wants to sing with "flare" let them, they are voicing their freedom that we so gladly embrace.

Now, I don't think Roseanne Bar stayed at the appropriate level, she elevated it to something dirty and wrong, the epitome of people without a conscious.

Until a few months ago, I was required to remove my cap and stand at attention for the National Anthem, now I may stand at attention with my right hand covering my heart, which I feel is more proper when standing for the anthem. (Yes I am active duty)

So my personal position on it is, if you can do it so that it still adds grace it is fine, if you use it to prove a point or your personal view of America, well its treason in my eyes.

That's funny, I'd defend this country so artists could sing it any way they want.
