    Device for measuring magnetic fields...

Can anyone suggest a cheap way to measure magnetic fields? I want to be able to test whether there is a significant difference in the strength of the magnetic fields of two different rooms. I understand a simple compass could be used, anything else? I can't get my hands on a voltmeter, the physics department here is a bit stodgy. If they weren't I could have just attached a wire loop to one of the leads on the voltmeter and I would have been in business. Otherwise I'd have to just buy my own voltmeter for like $100+. Screw that. Any household ways that anyone knows off besides a compass?

Gaussmeter that sounds like it would work. But it says you have to place it next to the item you're testing. I'm trying to test a room, will that work?
