    Hard drive issue [WinXP]

So, I built an external HDD [basically, took a WD SATA drive and stuck it in an enclosure]. However, for whatever reason it isn't being recognized anymore as an external drive [a la, it was on, i used it, i went back to it later and no mas]. So, I want to stick it in the computer. So, I took it out of the enclosure and plugged it in. BIOS sees it, but Windows doesn't.

Why would this be? In computer management it doesn't see it, so it isn't like I've just not been able to see it cuz it's not formatted. Though I guess if someone could point me in the right direction either way, it'd be great.

what did you make the enclosure of? how is the heat transfer of it?

my two ideas are you made it of metal and placing the HDD inside it the bottom made contact and shorted it out, killing it. or if it was enclosed, too much heat, fried.

I bought it, it's an aluminum enclosure with a fan. Built by Rosewill.

IF the drive still works, then it must be a software issue. See if there is an FAQ from Rosewill around.. maybe someone else had the same issues.

I know you said the drive was sata, but what kind of connection does it have from the enclosure to the pc? Firewire?

You have it internally as a secondary hard drive or are you trying to install WinXP on an unformatted SATA drive?

I was trying to get it to work internally as a second HDD. The drive is NTFS formatted and has data on it. Currently, it's sitting in the new enclosure I bought.

Did you check the jumpers on the drive to make sure they're setup properly?

Ah ok. I'm having an issue installing WinXP on a new SATA drive. I've found the solution I've just been too lazy to do it. Not the same thing though if yours is a secondary drive.

I had my own special set of issues installing windows onto this machine, also due to my HDD setup [SATA & RAID0]

It's SATA, there are no jumpers.

There's an issue with the driver for the SATA controller you're using, or something with the way it's setup in the controller BIOS.
