Anyone get their hands on any Ardbeg yet? They re-opened the distillery in '97, so their first run of 10-year came out this year.

I'm a big fan of Lagavulin and Laphraiog, so I wanted to look into Ardbeg. Just looking to get some input before I invest in a bottle.

I can submit a bottle of Ardbeg for review this year during deer season. We have a steady Laphraiog man there. Thanks for the heads up.

I haven't developed a wide appreciation of Scotch. Cragganmore is the only one I really appreciate so far.

Eh, it isn't the most expesive of Scotches. Its about $50 a bottle. I might as well just pick one up.

I need to get a fresh bottle of Lagavulin as well, that one is a bit more pricy at about $90.

wish i could afford scotch ... grandma has a nice selection and i couldn't begin to tell you the names ...

i have to buy aged rum ... Pussers, bacardi8, appletons. I can stand the taste of a 30.00 rum waaay more than cheap scotch.

I've got a Genn Parker and a Glenfiddich port finish right now. I want to get my hands on the Madiera finish eventually.


With the exception of wine, most expensive alcohol is worth the money you pay.

I say that wine isn't worth it because that market (above at least the $20/bottle level) is dictated strictly by supply and demand. It does not cost appreciably more to manufacture a $100 bottle of wine than it does a $15 bottle of the same varietal. In all other alcohol markets, the price generally reflects the expense of manufacture. Not always, but usually.

It's the same reason I don't buy "designer" liquor.

Very few wines are worth the difference in price, and I drink a lot of wine. The difference between a good $10-20 bottle of wine and a $100 bottle of wine can be VERY slim.

Certain wines, unfortunately, don't have a cheaper alternative. Try finding a good cheap Amarone and you'll be out of luck.

Aged rums are good, but not worth blowing the wad on. I have a $27 bottle of Appleton that I use to make rum & cokes with, even with a mixer as strong as coke the difference is quite noticeable. I don't drink rum neat, though.

Scotch is absolutely worth spending some money on. I don't know about the $300+ bottles, but a good $100 bottle of scotch will last a while and you will enjoy every penny of it.

I'll try to snag a bottle of Ardbeg this weekend and let people know how it is. Any new Islay distillery is good news, though

I've begun drinking scotch recently [basically, out of the desire to have an 'adult' drink that I can enjoy and look borderline... intelligent] and I do enjoy it. I've not tried the scotch in question [or many, for that matter... unfortunately], but I'm working on it.

Johnny Walker Green would be a good place to start. $50 a bottle, its an excellent blended scotch. A lot of scotch newcomers are put off by single malts at first, but a good blended can be a good beginning.

There aren't a lot of good scotches that cost less than $50 a bottle.

I've never drank scotch to get drunk. I'll have it after dinner or when I'm hanging out with friends.

My old man has some expensive taste for scotch, so I started with his stuff. He's got some Johnny Walker blue, but he prefers single malts. I can't think of any off the top of my head, including the bottle I got him for Christmas last year... 15 y/o, single malt, bottle is hand numbered with what cask it came from and what number out of the cask it was out of the total number. Balvenie or something like that. Tasty

Started out on the rocks, have made my way to drinking it in what is supposedly "proper"... neat with a few drops of water.

Yeah, on the rocks tends to add too much water.

I tend to prefer one ice cube, or a splash of water. Depends on the strength of the scotch. A lot of scotch is bottled at 45% or higher, so a little water isn't going to water it down at all.
