    Mac guys / Linux guys

We've got a powermac g5 here that we cant stand.

we want to turn it over to linux for giggles.

Reccomend a distro that works on a mac? I've had experience with Fedora and Ubuntu, but these were both done on PC....

Ubuntu has a ppc port, there are several ubuntu/kubuntu users here that can answer questions.

I am a Ubuntu user. I can vouch for Ubuntu and Kubuntu/Xubuntu (to a lesser extent, as I do not use them often). I have used all three, but use Ubuntu routinely. The new version has a few quirks, but is great overall. I can try to help you if you need it, but I am by no means an expert. I am not sure if the "stock" drivers will work 100% with all hardware (I see no reason why not) but with easy access to restricted drivers through the GUI, it is a cinch to get everything running.

If you are not a fan of X/K/Ubuntu, give Mepis or Knoppix a try. I have used both and they are nice as well. I have a little more experience with Knoppix, but do not really use either routinely. I just put it on my old POS family PC that has been in the garage for years. I have played with Mepis and it was nice, and hear great things from most users.

You can find live CDs for any of those distros online easily.

Use PPC instead of Mac and you'll find what you're looking for.

Select the "Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) desktop CD" link. This will DL an .iso image. Burn this to a CD and boot from it. You can try out Ubuntu and test out hardware functionality. You can also reformat or appropriately partition the HD for an install.

Yes sir, they are. Ubuntu is the Gnome version, Kubuntu is KDE, Xubuntu uses XFce, and I do not remember for the life of me what Edubuntu uses. I think it is just Xubuntu with educational software pre-installed... I think. Knoppix also uses KDE as does Mepis. Although you can use multiple desktop environments from one install (e.g. Gnome on Mepis, of all three of the above from one Ubuntu install if you download all of the necessary files).

It's been a while since I toyed with Linux but I remember Yellowdog linux has a version for the Mac G5 processor. Might wanna try that. :P

Although I think you have to pay money for that.

                      Edit:
Nope I was wrong, looks like you can get it here.
