    Going to Poland....

For the funeral of a friend I've known for a long time. He was the drummer for the band Decapitated and passed away after substaining head injuries in a tour bus accident.

I want to know if anyone has been there, and what should I see while Im there?

i was born in gdynia way up north on the water. beautiful city, gold laced buildings. warsaw is the capitol, plenty to do there. check out auchwitz (sp?), which was the famous death camp in ww2. krakow is one of the most beautiful cities in all of europe.

there is tons of heritage, this country is over 1000 years old. youll LOVE it

Exchange for Euro's here. It's not the easiest to find a money changer there.

Northwestern town on the coast....sounds like "Medzyk" with a few more vowels tossed in. Ancestrial home.

Anyone else find it ironic, that a guy from "Decapitated" died from head injuries?

ok, maybe I've been in the sun too long today.

In my days in the kitchen I've met a lot of polish cooks and dishwashers and they are the craziest people I know. Great people. I guess there must not have been much opportunity there for them because they had a pretty crappy job here on a work vista and were loving it. Maybe not I don't know much about the culture and country.

I wish I could remember how to pronounce some bad words in polish they taught me so I could tell you "How to pick up a chick" and end up getting slapped... hmmm too bad.

Take lots of pictures and post them.

in the 70s and 80s poland was under communist rule, and fell apart really bad. in the 80s that went away to democracy, and now the country is thriving. one of the best militaries in the world, awesome financially, and pretty much rebuilt everything. great place great people

now that i think about it, technically i was born a communist!!!

This is some pretty good advice. I lived in poland for two years. Great stuff. There is a guy in Krakow that cooks sausage over a hickory fire. He only works nights and his stand always has a bunch of people in line to get it. Worth asking around. Make sure and eat several of the pretzels street vendors sell. Mint Apple juice and sesame snacks were my favorite treats. Go to Zakopane' and buy a cane/ walking stick. Hike the mountains there too. Also the salt mines are worth the time.

Besides Karkow, Warsaw and the Northern coast you should consider some of the smaller villages if you want to see provincial (sp?) life. Look for some folk artist wood carvers and buy a cool carving. Did I mention eating some sausage? Oooh go to a milk bar and eat some perogi/ whatever sounds good. If you find some mormon missionaries they make great tour guides and know all the ins and outs of most things. Even better is of course a polak with nothing else to do and a decent command of english.

Wish I was going with you.
