Why is the difference between a mac and a PC?

pc, almost all the programs work on them that are out there. the most of the issues people have with the software orginate between the keyboard and the seat.

and apples have no viruses? http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/interne.../apple.trojan/ dated 2k4. they just aren't talked about as much.

Today 02:27 PM" yeah right. before i owned a computer at home i would use my friend's apples and the ones at school for 4 years until i got a PC. to this date i cannot stand using macs. i find them less intuitve (a big claim from apple) and just annoying to use. it's all flair. i would actually like to take my current computer and see if i can get os X installed on it and see how much it bogs down. seeing as how vista is a "rip" of osx and it's a system hog, i'm sure it is.... and to quote maddox of "best page in the universe":

hm... can't drag and drop, lower case "s" issue? sound like an ID io t error to me.

fixing a mac. you don't. you buy a new one. fixing a pc, replace the broken part. silly proprietary computers.

Unix is an open source operating system. the user is has much more control of the system and how it runs. it is not impossible to mess up. it's actually very easy to mess up, or to delete one file and kill the OS. see glickman's thread " I am going to stab whoever thought of wildcards for shell scripting. Me: hmm, ok lets get rid of these test directories...
Bash: rm -r dir*" the command "kill". haha. at least windows makes it a little bit harder to accidentally remove the OS.

so like... i'm not really that diverse with computers, ive had mine since 03. it's a dell laptop... today me and my girlfriend were having a discussion about mac computers, and our first question is why do they not get viruses?

also what are the differences between a pc and a mac? good points/bad points..

other points to consider is that i'll be needing a computer after highschool for college.. stuffs...

They don't get viruses for two reasons (per my experience):

1. they only have a 6% market share
2. the people that use them tend to be more aware of their computing experience and thus less prone to virus enabling activity

go buy one of the $400 Walmart Linux computers

As to MS Word. Microsoft( or is it apple? ) made it easy enough to transfer the whole program, drag and drop, from an older powerbook to mine.

woah, i was just looking at apple's site. 8gb of ram is over 1.5k?? "8GB (8 x 1GB) [Add $1699]" where are they getting it from, the moon? http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0257486 - $69.99 but it's for 2gb, multiply by 4 and you get $279.96.
and a 320 SATA hd is $329? i just found one for $70 new! wow. just, wow

there is no chance i'm ever going to get a mac now. i was thinking of getting one to see what i can make it do, but not any more.

That's FB-DIMMs on the Mac Pro. Not cheapo DDR. Compare similar hardware if you want a real comparison. New memory types are more expensive. You can also find 3rd party FB-DIMMs a lot cheaper than Apple sells their ram for.

also ...macs hold their value better than PCs...PCs companiens come out with something new every month...making the old "obsolite" so if you build a pc it is alright, but it you buy them...you get screwed.

macs are better. Almost all pc programmers use them. They are also less compatible with 90% of software you will need in college. Get a pc.

Almost all? More like most don't use mac.
Top platforms for programmers are Windows and Linux.

I operate OSX Macs for a living, but my personal machines are all PCs. Would never buy a Mac for a personal computer. I find the windows user interface more powerful and better suited to multitasking. The OSX UI is clunky; the dock concept is a primitive version of the taskbar. Never had a virus; I practice smart computing.

The Macs at work crash all the time. Look up kernel panic. Heck common programs like Firefox are less stable on OSX.

I share the view that Macs are overrated but they do represent nice integrated packages for novices to casual power users. Casual power users sounds like an oxymoron, I know, but I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about.

I use a macbook with the a core duo and 1 gb ram. I use both windows and os x for different reasons. On windows I play games, browse the interweb, and use matlab. Matlab blazes *** on my computer by the way. On the mac side I don't really play any games for it, because there arent any. However, I believe its a much better platform for studying and work. The programs I use make my life so much easier and have generally have no competitors on the windows platform. quicksilver pretty much makes the dock obsolete as all I have to do to launch any application is double tap my command key and type a few letters. virtue desktops gives me the ability to have multiple desktops that I can use for different purposes. For example if I'm doing my math homework (its online hw) I can keep my pdf textbook, mathematica, and the homework all on seperate desktops so I'm not constantly resizing windows and such. Another program that is extremely convenient is my copy/paste manager iclip 4, this program stores the last 10 things I copied so I can go through a document copying everything I need without having to transfer it every time. It places them in bins which can be brought up with a simple keystroke. The last program I'll mention is called camouflage, I honestly don't understand why this program isn't a default for both windows and macs. If there is one thing I cant stand its having icons covering up my high res desktop of the crab nebula, or whatever random high res image from space is on my desktop. All I have to do is hit command+/ and all icons are covered and my desktop is perfectly clean. I can double click anywhere on the desktop and it opens up a window so I can see everything on my desktop in a list.

If you aren't looking to play intense games on your laptop I would absolutely recommend getting a macbook and installing a windows partition because that way you can have the best of both worlds.Just make sure to get a big hd because it's annoying as hell having a small one and two operating systems. If you really need to play games you could get a macbook pro, which has a non built in graphics card and can play games like bf2, etc.
