    Dana 30 diff.

Hey yall, I have a Jeep Techish question. Does anyone know if I put a limited slip in the front of my 94 jeep wrangler, would it undo the welded spider gears that the idiot before me welded? Right now the front end of my jeep acts like a spool because he welded the spider gears. Who welds the front differential, anyways? I just don't know weather installing a limited slip would take out the welded part or not. I don't even know where spider gears are in a differential. Thanks for all the help.

Why are you running a D30 anyhow :-p. What size tires you got?

but ummm as for your Q. Go to the pick and pull (junk yard)l and just get a whole new carrier.

To be honest I don't really know if a whole new lsd would solve your problem or not. I think it would, but would be much more costly than just getting a new carrier. Or if youre into wheeling, I guess get an lsd. I'd think though, if you are that into wheeling you would get a d44 instead.

    mmm lincoln locker

    or right here

p.s. the spider gears are the ones that run on the side. if that makes any sense

I have the Dana 30 because I don't want to go through the hassel of swapping in a D44. I'm running 33" Firestone M/Ts with chrom-moly shafts. I havn't broken an axle shaft yet with these shafts. So are spider gears something that joins up with the ring?

According to Randys ring and pinion you have a dana 30 reverse rotation.

Should help in getting whatever you need.

and I think you can just get new spider gears. I'd just replace the whole gear set though... or a D44 itd be easier.

Also, I believe the spider gears run on the ring and drive the axles.

Yes, the LSD replaces the parts that would be welded. All that's in there besides the differential is the ring & pinion. The spider gear that are welded together are inside the original differential.

why put all that money into a D30?

anyways man, do you have locking hubs on the thing? i've heard of people welding the front and just keeping the hubs unlocked while driving on the street.

typically you only weld spider gears when your rig is going to be pretty much a trail better rig. Kind of a poor mans looking diff.

Sorry... I was on vacation in Cali! Just got back this afternoon...

Anywho, here's a pic of your typical differential:

8 is the ring gear and is bolted to number 9 which is the carrier. Your spider gears are #5 and are pinned into the carrier with that large pin. They mesh with the side gears #6 which are splined onto your axleshafts. The spiders allow the side gears to turn at different speeds for turning and such. Normally when someone does a "lincoln locker" they weld the spiders to the side gears, the spiders to the carrier, and the side gears to the carrier... basically they just weld the hell out of everything to keep it from ever moving again.

Now here's a pic of your typical limited slip:

So to answer your question, yes it would replace the entire carrier... you would just bolt your original ring gear onto it and then reinstall it in the diff. BUT there's more to it than just removing it and replacing it, you'd have to setup your differential gear mesh and get the backlash right too... you do this by inserting shims between the side bearings and the differential housing and also by shimming your pinion (#7 in the pic) in or out...

So basically my recommendation would be to run the welded diff until it explodes into a bajillion little pieces and then upgrade to a stronger (Dana 44, Dana 60) fron axle.

Ugggghhhhh we drove... Had to take some furniture out to my sister, help them put up a new wall in their house, and then bring their dog back because they no longer wanted her. So we took my dad's extended cab powerstroke with a camper shell on the back. The kids sat in the tiny back seat, but at least they're still small enough that it didn't bother them any. They managed to bother the hell out of me though!

California was alright... went to legoland and that was pretty sweet. Saw about a hundred thousand more people than I ever want to see again... Bought a sweet lego Technic set though so that was a plus.

Basically it was the longest trip EVAR!

That is a long drive. So, you happen to drive through Lovelock on I-80?

No, we were headed for Southern Cali, more specifically Corona, so we didn't even go through Nevada at all. Most of the trip was on I-40 through half of New Mexico, all of Arizona, and part of California... lot of bare land between here and there!
