    Truck Problems...

    Alright, so I just got back from a glorious night at Buffalo Wild Wings eating my $.40 wings. Came back home (was in my friends car) and noticed my dome light was on....it has probably been on for 2 days.....1999 Dodge Dakota 5.2l v8. Hooked up the cables and let it sit for a while. Finally got it to turn over and start, but if I let up off of the throttle, the engine dies...
    I'm thinking it could be an alternator issue, or hopefully something much easier and less expensive.
    Any idea what the problem is? We gave up because it was like 25* outside and 1:30 in the morning.

    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

      How long did you have the truck idling? It doesn't sound like for very long.

      Wait until the sun's up and jump it again. The 5.2L takes a while to warm up (actually, the oil does) and until the Oil's thin enough to flow freely, it's going to continue to stall on you. Get is started but don't rev the engine...just keep the pedal down so that's it's like doing 5-10 mph (parked of course) and until the truck's at it's normal operating temp. When it's warmed up, slowly take your foot off the gas and let it idle for about 15 minutes. When that's up, try revving the motor a little bit....just short, quick bursts and see if it stalls. If not, take it out on the highway for like 40 minutes - 20 one way and then back...(have your buddy follow you JIC). Return home and park it...shut it off. Count to 10 and see if it starts.

          sounds like the alternator. i had the same problem with my silverado. turned out it was the alternator. not the most expensive repair considering i could do it myself but not the cheapest either. try putting a battery charger on the battery overnight on a trickle cycle and then try again.

              Thanks guys! As soon as it would start, I would have to keep my foot on the throttle a little bit to keep it from dying, otherwise it would die right away. I'll try to let it warm up more and see if that works. This is probably the worst time for this to happen...I'm at school and my last day of class is Friday, so I have to drive home then....keep your fingers crossed!

                  Could be the battery as well. If it runs while under load, that means the alternator may be producing current, the battery just can't hold a charge.

                      Sounds like you fried the cells out of the battery. I'd take out the battery and alternator, and get them tested at autozone.

                          sounds like leaving the dome light on drained the battery to me, its got enough juice to run the light but thats it. once you get it running im assuming it has a gugae that shows if the alternator is charging, whats it say? 12-14 i believe is normal range as long as its not below that you should be good to go there. i would say jump it and let it run for at least 45min for the altenator to charge the battery back up.

                              So I went to check out the battery and alternator at about 3pm today. Went in to try and fire it up, and it started just like new. I am extremely relieved that I didn't have any bigger issues. I took it to autozone to get checked anyways and the guy who checked it didn't seem like he knew what he was doing, but the battery leveled off at 12.53, so that wasn't the problem. I'm thinking that it was just too cold last night.

                                  Stop messing with it. Start it and run it through three or four drive cycles, or go somewhere and figure out what the idle relearn procedure is.

                                  After losing power long enough the computer will have to go through an idle relearn procedure to reset idle - if you don't know / don't have the Chrysler DRB to do it with just drive it a bit and it will reset itself.

                                      yea, most of those guys dont know what there doing.. had them test and say a starter for my mustang was junk, took it home, cleaned it up and it worked great plus your first problem is that its a dodge..
