Well put. Schools and similar institutions are caught between a rock and a hard place. If they don't have such policies and enforce them uniformly, they can easily be held liable. While I seriously doubt that young girl was a threat with the knife, it is not inconceivable someone else could have stolen it from her and misused it. Likewise, a parent of another kid whose finger was accidentally but severely lacerated would be screaming at the school district for allowing dangerous items on the school grounds. Last, it would take a really stupid or ignorant school administrator to put him/herself in a position of deciding it is okay to be lenient on one kid who carried a knife while enforcing the policy fully against another. Going down that path would lead to lawsuits and likely an attempted firing for discrimination.

So, who here has a workable solution for the school system?

Coolhand, do really think this incident will doom the little girl to become a degenerate? However, I do agree you that gridlock is the most desirable option on the political horizon for us.

Will being suspended from school cause her to become a degenerate? Of course not. But having Federal Weapons charges against her very well might (which someone said something about, maybe the OP, it's late and I'm not going to reread the whole thread again, suffice to say I'm pretty sure I read somewhere in there before I posted that Federal Weapons Charges were pending).

School punishments for violating school rules are fine by me. Dooming the kid to never hold a decent job in her life by tacking a felony onto her record before middle school, not fine at all. THAT would be wholly retarded, and that is what I was ranting about. If her parents have any balls at all, it won't go that far.

Taking an chewing and suspension from school makes no difference in her life a year from now, but Felonies will follow her forever and prevent her from doing a great many things.

I'm not even sure you could charge a kid that age with a felony, but that don't mean a retarded DA wouldn't try it if they thought it'd win them some power points.

The entire idea of it is preposterous, but I'm sad to say that even the preposterous must be thought about and guarded against in this day and age. I mean, ten years ago, would you have thought you'd have to take off half your clothes, throw away your nail hygiene products and buy shampoo in ity bity bottles in order to get on an airplane without being shot? I sure as hell wouldn't have, but after flying to Mexico and back last winter, I can see a near future where people must be naked and shrink-wrapped to their seat before boarding the plane, it's gotten that stupid at the airport.

I know one thing, after the hours and hours spent at the airport this last time, if it's less than ten hours one way, I drive there. You come out about even on the time spent, and you end the day a lot less pissed off, even after having dealt with inconsiderate truck drivers and women driving huge SUV's while doing their make-up and talking on a cell phone. I know I felt a hell of a lot safer after they made the old lady in front of me consent to being frisked and having her huge purse tossed. They took away her nail file (one of the cardboard ones no less), and then left her to sweep her crap back into her bag. She had to have been 80 yrs old. BIG threat there.

Its ok, you can still agree with me. I mean the truth is the truth, just because you may not like what that truth is, doesn't make it not true. The powers that be LIED to the American people, how much proof do you need before you call liars a liar?

The problem with pretty much all pro poly's is they are beholding to the big business that put them in power. Im sorry to say, and any true republican should back me on this one, the current admin is the most guilty off all time. The current admin has basterdized the true Republican ideal, small government and fiscal responsiblity. Not to say the dems are doing any better, but there was a time when there were checks and balances but those times are LONG gone. Any American, Repub or Dem that thinks America is going in the right direction is truely delusional. The attack on civil liberties, the out right fraud with taxpayers dollars, and the total disrespect for people of the world shown by our government has put us on a very bad track.
Due to the objections of a certain Canadian, this space is now for rent.

Now that you and I can agree on.

Shartly - Yeah, I get what you're saying, I must have misunderstood what the OP said and took it to mean that she WAS being charged with a felony (which is still retarded IMO, but I digress). If she's not, then my whole big rant was for naught (since it was about something that's not actually happening ).

I get caught like that sometimes because of my ingrained distrust of pretty much all public authority figures. It's been a long time around here since you could look to the cops or public leaders as shining examples. Sure, I imagine there are good souls in that mix, but I've never met them. I've ran across a few decent cops, but mostly, they were from somewhere else just passing through. lol

At any rate, it's good to see that you're still alive as well. It's hard to tell if folks are busy, or just not visiting AO. I trawl by every day, but it's a rare day that I see anything worth posting in anymore. Other than the recent decline around here, I've been busy with the day job and trying to get my shop in some semblance of order so I can actually work out there again. And, I'm still plugging away (ever so slowly) at the electro mag frames that some very patient souls are waiting on. I'm hoping to have them delivered (finally) before the new year gets to be very old.

Have a good one fellers (even you AirAssault ).

              No worries.

As for me, it is a combination of just not coming around much AND being busy. It is good to see you still kicking and plugging away.

I remember the days when you could carry a Molotov cocktail with you to school, burn someones face off, and come home again without anyone even being bothered.

                  True story.

(are you guys nuts? Of course guns/knifes shouldnt be allowed in schools!)

You laugh, but when I was a junior in HS I had to do a five minute informative speech for a class. So I did it over how to disassemble and clean my favorite plinking rifle at the time.

Brought it with me to school, kept it in my locker until I needed it, did the speech, back to my locker, took it back home. Nobody thought anything about it. It wasn't uncommon at all to hunt in the morning and bring the rifle/shotgun to school with you so you weren't late and just leave it locked in your vehicle.

Now they shoot you if you bring a weapon within 17 miles of a school. Of course, we've never had any shootings, stabbings, or even really gnarly fights. Pretty low impact out in these parts.

This is true. We saw skinning demonstrations as well when I was in school. Heck, we used to bring hunting rifles and shotguns AND ammo to school in our (well not mine since I didn't have one, but you know...) cars so that kids could go hunting after school.

And we used to also have smoking areas outside so kids could chew and smoke.

Remember being able to send your kid down to the local store for some beer and cigarettes for you?

Times have indeed changed..... And I don't think it is the laws or rules that make or break us, it is the culture and accountability/lack of accountability that does.

I went to a small, rural high school. My graduating class consisted of 66 seniors. Almost all the males had a rack in the back of their pickup with at least one rifle. School was let out for the first couple of days of deer season. Almost all males also carried pocket knives, mainly Bucks, some in holsters on our hips. Many of the females also carried knives. If your knife couldn't shave hair, you were ridiculed. At lunch and on breaks, we often played mumblypeg and chicken with our knives. No one ever pulled a knife or gun at school with the intent of using it on someone else. We were responsible with our weapons and knew what would happen if someone actually tried to use a weapon to cause harm. Sadly, that is far gone from our society now. Personal responsibility seems too much a burden for current times.
