    Fossil preservation

I know the infamous TK is into paleontology, so maybe he can answer this. My dad is a big scuba diver, and one of his favorite dive sites is a fossil bed off the Carolina coast. Most are shark teeth, including a lot of Megaladon teeth. I was given one for christmas, but all that has been done was a little scrub and fresh water rinse, and is now in a simple glass and plastic display box on a bed of cotton. I know metal that has been immersed in salt water for a long time has to be slowly desalinated or else is will literally fall apart very quickly. Is there anything that I should do to ensure its preservation?

I'd let it soak in freash water for a month, changing the water every week.

Obviously, it is stone or calium deposit now so the salt shouldn't have much affect on it...but what the heck?
