There is an interesting article in the LA Times about the decline of Guiness sales in Ireland due to the opening of its market after joining the EU. There has been a huge influx of Czech beers as well as cheap American beers. They even said that there was more consumption of Guiness in Nigeria than in Ireland! There was also a quote from a review of Irish pubs that described a pub as "pouring the perfect pint of Budweiser"

Yeah, i've never been all about getting drunk, actually never have been, been slightly buzzed when i was riding through chicago with thousands of others cause i was drinking and wasn't drinking much water, but for the most part i've always enjoyed beer but haven't drunk enough to actually get drunk.

            Crossposted from Thorums:

Picked up a 22 oz. bottle of Stone Brewing Company's Arrogant Bastard Ale yesterday, had it last night. It's sort of a gimmicky beer, but I find their gimmick to be pretty funny. On the bottle:

This is an aggressive beer. You probably won't like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory -- maybe something with a multi-billion dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it's made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal. perhaps you think that multi-million dollar ad campaigns make a beer taste better. Perhaps you are mouthing your words as you read this.

That's not even a super-promotional image, that's exactly what it looked like for me when I poured it... I was impressed, it's just a good-looking beer. It starts a bit bitter, almost spicy, but it's not overpowering, and not really comparable to something like a super-hopped double IPA. The bitterness was really only noticeable the first few sips, after that it was a fairly easy-drinking beer that I enjoyed. Wasn't GREAT, but certainly good. And it wasn't even too expensive, under $5 for the 22 oz. bottle coming from San Diego.

If you're at all interested in experimenting with new and interesting beers, I'd recommend giving Arrogant Bastard a shot. Maybe split it with a friend if you're unsure about it.

The Stone Cold IPA is delicious too... lots of breweries out in San Diego. Any other SD favorites out there? I'm a big fan of the Coronado Brewing Company... sunday refills on your growler for $5!

The bottle breathes and warms up to a proper ale temperature. It seems like every time you pour more from the bottle it tastes different. It's like a sampler pack of ale.

I find Shiner Bock very harsh straight out of the bottle, but if you pour it out and let it breathe a while, it makes a fair snack. The best way to drink it is from the keg to a pitcher and from the pitcher to your mug. It smooths out considerably.

I guess it's a common effect for a lot of heavy beers, but it's not very noticeable in ZeigenBock or AmberBock.

The best beer I've had was at a professional society chili cook-off at the Saint Arnold's Brewery. Their Brown and Amber ales on tap were super smooth. The same beer off the shelf is good, but not quite the same. I didn't know I could drink that much beer.

I pick up a bottle of Chimay on the way home from work on Friday nights. I drink it much the same way. Chill it until after dinner, pour it into a short, chilled glass with a big mouth so it breathes well, and keep the bottle at hand for refills.

Aerating beer takes some of the hoppiness out of it.

Well I'm actually on the east coast, so I have to rely on places with lots of distribution and bottling. So I'm sure I'm missing out on lots of good beer. I've got a buddy in San Diego for the summer doing Navy stuff, I'm quite jealous.

I am always willing to try new/different beers. As of now, my current favorite is Belhaven Wee-Heavy (http://www.beerpal.com/Belhaven-Wee-Heavy-Beer/589/). What makes it nice is that my friends have a bar that focuses on beers from all over the world... my favorite that they have is Kasteel Bruin....MMMMM!!!! (http://www.beerpal.com/Kasteel-Bruin-Beer/788/).

Here's a link to their site to give you an idea what they have to choose from:

So many beers... so little time (and money )

Woodchuck is o.k. It was much better back when it was first introduced. If I'm gonna drink a "hard cider," I go with Magners.
