Antivirus XP 2008

Watch out for Antivirus XP 2008, its been making its way around the net apparently. I have no idea how I got it I didnt even click any links or anything it just appeared over night, but it scared the crap out of me this morning when my computer just went wild with virus warnings.

My dad got it while browsing, thinking the pc got infected (which is why I tell him never to deal with those things ). I hope AVG will deal with it, although I'm bookmarking your site.

Hmm, that just popped up in my browser. I just closed the tab and went on... thought it was amusing it said it was scanning XP for viruses, when I'm running OS/X

It was werid because my Avira Antivir went crazy with detections at the same time. Went to run a scan with Antivir and then my desktop disappeared.....oh well at least it was an easy fix.

Is this the goofy spyware that changes your background into a giant red warning then falsely spam reports nonexistant virus' to scare you into purchasing their spyware software? If so, I just had to remove that crap from my gf's parents computer the other day. Spybot killed it.

yep thats the one.....when I scanned using Antivir it was detected and removed, but I was still missing the ability to change my background(the tab literally wasnt in the properties menu).....running whats said in the above link fixed everything.

Well it wouldn't be very fun if you could just change the background to remove it. I personally thought the spyware was funny. Especially using it as a way to scare non-tech savvy people into sending you money for nothing.

I was curious though. If you paid, does it remove itself, or continue to stay there anyway?

People are real creative when it comes to siphoning money for services people dont need or could get elsewhere for free. Its kind of like all the credit report commercials you see on tv, you can get a free credit report from the government for free with no strings attached....but ones that advertise get you hooked into a subscription program where if you dont cancel your getting charged(also to sign up takes 1 minute online, the phone call to cancel lasts about an hour from what I was told)

Thats a good question on what happens if you actually pay.....it probably fixes everything for a little bit, and then comes back even worse saying you have to upgrade to premium or send in your computer or something crazy...
