    Trebuchet

This is an ongoing project so I will update it later but background

For my physics class I have to construct and fire a trebuchet. My group was fortunate enough to be sponsored by EP minerals so we already had a trebuchet, as my teacher does this every year. However each year you have to change something on it. Last year the arm on our trebuchet was badly damaged, so this year we hacked it off and started on changing it drastically. Well sort of.

I don't have before pictures but here are some since we removed the old arm.

    The frame

The original arm used 2 pieces of 2" box tubing stacked and welded and then those slid into two pieces of channel that sanwiched the arm. The channel had a rod welded through it which is the pivot. On the other end of the channel hung weights of choice. Which were able to freely swing.

We removed the box tubing and welded a piece of pipe directly onto the channel.
    :one of my partners

    Here I am messing around

The pipe is a little flexy since it is round and obviously lacks the rigidness of a square. So, we are going to put triangles onto the pipe and run a cable to one end of the pipe to the channel. We are going to do this on top and bottom.

We are going to increase the length of the channel by adding another 3.5' or so and then sandwhich 120lbs (rough estimate) liner plates from a gaint kiln used to bake DE. We plan on using 6 of these plates for roughly 700+ pounds.

Combined with the increased leverage and fixed weights (vs freely hung) We think this will be good to launch a 5 lbs pumpkin at least 3/4 across a football field. Or I hope. In the past they used closer to 900 lbs.

We're also adding new bearings and a hand crank to pull down the arm and we will introduce a new release for the arm.

I need to get some more recent pictures but theres a start and I just thought some of you might find this cool.

Ooo and the best part perhaps is that we have to wear costumes (as this is going on near Halloween ) and so we are dressing up as soldiers. My partner, (above in the picture) his brother just got back from Iraq and is going to lend us some of his ACU's or BDU's or whatever he has. Then, we have to fire at a target and hopefully hit it (we get to move it around, but consistency is key here). The target is a large piece of plywood propped up on pvc legs, she wants us to decorate it so I rasterbated a giant image of osama bin laden and we will glue it to our target

    hehe

Edit: btw that CSM shirt is blasphemy because I'm admitted to Makay at UNR wooo

If you put it on a track so it can move foward and back freely it will increase the range.

niiiice, I've always wanted to build one of these....either that or an air cannon pumpkin chucker.

you know your now going to have to get a video of launching, right?

I'll be interested to see how you reinforce that pipe....what kind of angle are you guys looking at between the stringer cable and the pipe? planning on using something like turnbuckles to put them in tension?

Tracks would be cool but i'm afraid at this point we simply don't have time. We need to get this finished by monday and have done several test launches. Thanks for the idea though and I'll pass that on as something perhaps they can do for the kid who inherits this next year.

I'll do my best to get a video I'm sure I will though. As far as the angle I'm not sure, we're cutting some triangles out so that the cable can "ride" in a notch on the top of them. Turnbuckles, exactly! We're also using one to adjust the rod where the sling hooks onto.

What impresses me most is that little mig you see on the ground is taking 480DC input! I'm used to our shops 110 and 220 migs! WOW industrial power is cool!

Here is where we started off today, as you can see this is far from the last picture. The cables and turnbuckles are in and the arm has been extended and mounted etc..

Then we moved onto the latching mechanism and mounting the weights and all that stuff.
              our help...

              yeah thats me... hah

Keep in mind we only had a few of the weights up there so... should go a little more violently when all done and we will be painting this too and a few other minor things

Haha, I can see why you'd think so but... the plant which we're building this at... refines this stuff called DE or diatemacious earth (sp) and is made of these ancient organisms called diatoms. It goes into floor dry and filter aid which is then used to filter stuff like wine and beer and juice and pools and all sorts of stuff. So the air is full of this stuff and thats what you're seeing, its like snow. Hence the respirators you see in some of the pics.

Lol maybe that was too much.

                    Looking good.

Though I've never seen a weight set up right in the arm.. I've always seen it in a swinging bucket. Seems to work fine though!

Yeah, the orignal configuration of the arm used a bucket that hung from the yellow channel. Then they took that off and were hanging tractor weights with a cable. We thought it would be more stable this way. So we extended the arm with more channel and stacked em with all thread

Full launch is hopefully tonight, if not, tomorrow.

                        Thanks!

Well today was the day and here is how it went. I think we won overall. Ours was throwing a consistent 70 yards every launch even though we did get it throwing around 90 before at my house. We used 5 plates totaling to a grand 775 lbs!

We hit our target once and I think every other time we hit it indirectly (aka shrapnel)

We went with a special forces theme, painted the trebuchet camo, and borrowed BDU's from my team members brother who got back from Iraq recently.

                            take that osama

here is some of our competition

ok who is the crazy cameraman who decides to rotate the camera 90* two second before launch? lol

nice job on the trebuchet. Now you just need to take it to a big game and launch cases of paint with it
