    Enfield .303

    I have myself some new toys tonight.
    two enfield rifles.

    One that im really excited for is in need of some help. it is a No.1 Mk4 (F)
    and the other one that is in working order at current is a 1917 SntLE III

    I know basically squat about them, but for the price i couldnt let them go.





    Im want to make a new stock for the one, and throw a cheap scope on the other.

    thoughts...suggestions?

      You mean No.4 Mk I, right? As far as I know, there was no No.1 Mk 4. There was what became known as the No.1 Mk III and No.1 Mk V, but I don't know about a IV. I own a No. 4 Mk II. Original bolt assembly and barrel, but the wood was going bad so I replaced it with a synthetic stock. I would have liked to keep it original, but it just wasn't happening. Still shoots tight groupings and everything.

      To put a scope on it, you'll need a scope mount (you probably already knew that).
      Similar to this, but obviously you'll need to find the one that fits your rifle:

      Also, I'd recommend this book if you want to get into collecting or restoring them. Or, even if you just want to know more about your rifles, this is a great book.

          Thanks alot for the info. anything is great. This was a total impulse buy. as of yesterday, i knew nothing about them.

          Yeah your right i screwed it up...its a No.4 Mk1 (F)
          as for the other one, even tho it says SntLE its a SMLE III, or so I read.

          I definitely need to read up on them. I am really looking foward to working on this rifle. I havent decided if i want to make it original or modernize it... i dont know if there is any value in keeping it original or just doing as I please with it.

              Do some research on them before you go drilling and tapping for a scope. Some Enfields aren't worth squat, others are worth a few hundred bucks.

                      Of course I agree with PyRo. I'd estimate your No.4 Mk. I to be worth somewhere around $200. Fazakerley is where the majority of No. 4 Mk I and II rifles were made, which makes them one of the more common Enfields on the market. (That's what the (F) etched into your receiver stands for). The ones that aren't worth a whole lot are the ones that were made at POF (Pakistan Ordinance Factory).

                      Of course also don't take my word for it. You can find out a whole lot with a little bit of research. Another thing to look at is if your magazine's serial number matches the serial number of the rifle. A lot of magazines and rifles got mixed up over the years. If they match, you've got one that either hasn't seem much action or was taken care of pretty well.

                          Are you sure that's a No4 Mk1 (f) and not a No4 Mk1 (*)?

                          Wiki has a decent article about the Lee Enfields.

                          Springfield Sporters should have a fair amount of parts for all Lee Enfield rifles.

                          I bought a No4 Mk2 from Big 5 a dozen years ago or so for $99. Bayonets were $1.99. It's my very favorite bolt action service rifle.
                          God gave you a soul.
