Where would you go to buy plane tickets?

I'm doing a little research into buying plane tickets for a possible trip to Europe this summer. I've never traveled before, and I don't know the first thing about where is best to get tickets.

Date is still extremely flexible. Place is also somewhat flexible, but I know it would include Switzerland. Whether that means flying straight there, or flying somewhere else in Europe and taking the train, or whatever else is still to be decided.

    I'd be leaving from California.

    Any advice?

    Thanks all.

I have had great luck with www.Kayak.com for tickets of all kinds.

If you don't care exactly when you fly, then cheaptickets.com or hotwire can have some good deals.

However, with the fuel and bag surcharges, there really aren't that many real bargains out there anymore.

I used www.skyscanner.net when I lived in Europe.

provides the rates of all other popular sites like orbitz n travelocity, while also searching tons of other sites, so at the very least u will get the same results as the other sites, which can cut down search time, and possibly provide cheaper tickets from the other sites. (use the quicksearch option for best results)

you can also access Wyndham Timeshares through the rentals tab up top, which basicly gives u access to timeshares without paying for memberships or working at companies that do.

the site allows you to book everything from car rentals to hotel rooms as well, and has google map embedded.

If you just plan on staying at one place, I'd recommend a package deal - tickets and hotel rooms together in one deal. Just makes it a lot easier. You can just google it and find them easily.

I don't know if this is the reason why - but if you don't mind longer waits between flights you can shave off a hundred bucks or so. (At least this was the case for me getting tickets to visit my folks in Florida for Christmas .. could have been unrelated to the layover difference)

I would say you should check out Ireland. I've only been to France other than Ireland .. But Ireland was 100x better than France. But Switzerland and (I'm assuming you'd make the trip to Italy) is also a really good adventure from what I hear. I loved Ireland to death, but if you're set on Switzerland that's a bit of a haul.
