      I don't see it getting much better. You are going to have to come up with a "quirky" scheme, both offensively and defensively to continue to win with the talent you are likely to get in Big 10 schools (and Notre Dame).

      I mean... lets say you are a top 5 player in your position.

      You have the choice to go to school in LA, Austin, Florida, or South Bend Indiana.

      Ummm.... weather, co-eds, and academic "leniency" all tend to favor going away from the Big 10 and Notre Dame.

      At one point you had a history of winning, and well these schools are still steeped in tradition the schools in the SEC and Big 12 (some of which have great tradition) and USC all have a better chance of winning the title and getting you a Heisman than the traditional nothern powerhouses.

      I like the Big 10 and would like to see a comeback, but as long as paying college athletes remains "against the rules" its going to be hard to lure the best talent on a consistant basis. Sure you might get some greatly touted QB but without the greatest talents at the other offensive positions how far can they take you?

        Lohman, we are normally right on the same page. However, college atheletes, especially football and basketball, are paid.

        A full ride includes housing, food, and discretionary money. Plus full tuition, books, tutors and more.

        If someone is a full scholarship athlete, they are getting paid.

        / had 1/4 scholarship at SC
        //obviously not football or basketball
        God....I guess I was probably returning videotapes.

          A fair and valid point Ricker, but lets assume that the athletes in question are the top of the class and have every intent on signing of going on to the next level. Lets also assume that they have multiple scholarship offers.

          Academic excellence offered by many of the traditional power schools is going to be less of a factor for people who beleive they are going to go onto the next level, so lets call all "pay" equal. I actually do agree with you that despite my earlier comments they are paid, and pretty well considering what some of them get.

          Until recently the traditional power schools (especially Notre Dame) offered something great: easy access to scouts and national exposure. ND still offers this, I think Brady Quinn might be in more commercials than any other back-up player. However, better scouting and more media have leveled this out - look at where Ben Roethlesberger and Flako went to school. The greatest players are found wherever, and media coverage no longer greatly favors the traditional powers.

          So, if you have an equal offer to go to Texas, Florida, USC, or South Bend, Indiana where are you going? What does South Bend offer that the others do not? Considering I think it far more likely any of the other three will play for a national championship over the next four yers I really don't think anything, unless you are looking for a traditionally "better" education. I use South Bend because it has the worst position, but the same can likely be pointed to for the traditonal northern power schools.

            University of Florida probably only has the weather over some the traditional powers while its a nice campus with great facilities it is located in a small town located in north florida, its not exactly south beach or los angles around here .

              Yeah, but Gainesville is the only (real) Florida college with an entre city built soley to support it. Its specifically geared to college students. Ive had as much fun in G-town as Miami (maybe more).
