Good idea for a first tattoo

Well, a woman I know has invited me to a local tattoo convention, and since I've been wanting to get one for a while, I guess it's time to take the plunge.

I was just wondering if anyone had any good ideas (yes, I know they're supposed to be personal and all, just curious). Also, any suggestions on location or size for a first one? I was thinking the arm somewhere, and moderate size. I don't want an arm sleeve, but I don't want a ladybug on my foot either.

first off, tell us some things that are personal to you. like sibling, parent, child? favorite band? hobbies? things that have changed your life or have been with you your whole life?

from there we can go with things that you would like.

just got another tattoo about 3 weeks ago now as a christmas present. i combined my favorite band which has been the one thing there for me through the good and bad. and a little something for my mom whom i have a very love hate relationship with but she is my mom and she has made me the person i am today

My buddy got a few cool ones on his shoulder blade, arm, and somewhere else. He has on of a bald eagle carrying Old Glory that I have always liked. My cousin had his rank insignia tattooed on his arm and had a phoenix on his chest. The griffin was awesome.

first thing , what is your tolerance for pain ? the more outline you get the more pain you will enjoy , shading isn't so bad but it still hurts , close to bone & thin skin mean extra pain , the easiest ones i've enjoyed are the upper arm on the outside , the worst has been on my sternum
Tattoo is still more or less permanent , so you should plan on having it a long time
Wall art sucks , draw it yourself , or have the tattooist draw it ( the good ones are excellent artist's )
have something done that has meaning to you ( don't matter what anyone else thinks ; it is your tattoo ) & you will be explaining why you got it for years to come
LISTEN to your tattooist , let him look at your skin , some skin doesn't like color , some does , if you walk in with a design , he may suggest some changes , if he does have him redraw it
Placement , there will be pleanty of mirrors around , make sure it is where you want it & it is positioned correctly

Thing NOT to do
don't insult your tattooist
don't try to cheap out on price ( Quality lasts forever also )
don't act like you know what he's doing when you don't
don't flinch ( too much )

its an extreme closeup that was warped during myspace resizing and it was 2nd day after, right after a shower so it also looks very dry

Good thing that I'm about double that

I'm thinking something to do with a Phoenix. A recent divorce and other life changes make me feel like I've started my life over. What better than a phoenix to represent that? I was thinking upper arm, maniacmechanic's input makes me feel better about that decision.

The convention is a good place to check out stuff, I figure. I'm in no rush.
