Yeah, that's "Canon", and all of their DSLRs are EF compatible. The APS-C sensor based models (example: Rebel XSi, and 50D) can also use the EF-S lenses.

Yes, I use a Rebel Xt. It is EF and EF-S compatible. Alot of people will say Nikon but Canon has never let me down. They are all business. I shoot a Rebel XT with 18-55, 28-80, and 80-200 lenses. They are all Canon with a Canon 430 flash on top. Awesome setup. Of course when it comes down to it, it is about the eye you have for a shot. If you can't pick out a good shot, I don't care what kind of camera you have, it won't look good. Look around, Nikon or Canon, look at both. I would start with looking at the Nikon D60 and Canon Rebel series. Pick the one that works best for you. Good luck.

Ok, so I think i have settled on a Rebel XSi 450D

But on ebay, it seams the cheapest price is just under $600 with a stock lens, I can't seam to find one for sale, body only...let alone on a online store with a good warranty policy

I'd like to have a lens that's good for shooting at the park or river with subjects, or people in the picture. I'd like to capture all the detail of the surrounding area, but also hold the lighting a focus of the subject.

Any tips on what lens I should buy?

The 18-55mm kit lens is surprisingly good. There are a ton of options in the mid range (not wide or tele) depending on your budget. Sigma has a nice 24-70ish (can't remember if it's 24 or 28) f2.8 for $400-$500 (I can dig up details if you want). It's tack sharp, but very loud while focusing. The Canon 24-70 f2.8L is $1500 or so.

You could also start with a nice prime. The Canon EF 35mm f2.0 is faster and shaper than even the L 24-70mm and is $240 at BH. 35mm is considered the normal focal length for an APS-C sensor. It's like a 50mm lens on a 35mm film or full frame sensor DSLR. I'm a big fan of primes. Zoom lenses are good when you have to be on the move constantly (like during a Wedding). But if you have more time Primes are better in every way. A 35mm f2.0 and 85mm f1.8 would cost $240 and $340 respectively and give you a lot of capability and incredible quality.
