    scammed by "friend" need advice

so my friend had a ticket to pay and wouldnt have money for two more days, he asks me to cash a check that he wrote out to me explaining the money was not in his account but would be by the time the check clears. i being a naive person say ok. well the check ends up bouncing and from the sounds of it the money never existed. so now im stuck with owing all this money. is there anything i can do without having a written agreement about the money?

Take him to small claims court. That is really your only option besides just convincing him to pay yourself.

You have the check. That is your written agreement that he would pay you.

Around here we hand the check to the police department, officer knocks on door and gets payment or arrests "friend" for the bad check. That being said if it was postdated you may not have the same strength. Here though the police generally collect :)

Never lend a friend money that you intend to get back.

Generally it goes like this. IF he is TRULY your friend, he would have been sure to pay you back. Now that it is obvious that he tried to screw you, he really isn't your friend. Pursue any legal recourse at your disposal and send dude down the road.

Less than 200$ ; swallow the loss & beat the stuffing out of him
More than 200$ ; let the Police handle it , get what you can back & when that's all over ( what 4 to 6 months )beat the stuffing out of him
            In a sutle , nice , way

Old Paratrooper saying...."Trust me with your life....but not your money or your wife".

This also holds true for firefighters, friends, or other "trustworthy" folks.

I agree with most of the above....call the cops, if they tell you you're screwed, beat the **** out of him with no witnesses.

Could be worse, your "friend" might have been this guy

I'd be a bit miffed. Contact your friendly local LEO for assistance. If that fails, I will not condone violence for liability reasons, but I'm sure you could figure a way to make it right
