    home audio system for parties

    Hey guys,
I'm looking for some guidance for my speaker situation, where to go for deals(tiger direct?) where to research? Etc. I know some AOers are speaker buffs
    My situation
-Im moving into a house next year and need to fill the basement up with speakers for parties.
-I'm looking for speakers that bump obviously and sound descent.
-Anything that could work in correlation with lights(corny, but its the party atmosphere)
-My budget for a system(not including lights neccasarily) is around 300-400.
I know my budget is going to limit me, but I'm a poor college student. Any guidance is appreciated.
I knew not what I did but am now edumacated

We've gotten away with an old 4 speaker stereo setup (I think my roomate got it from circuit city).

It has two front speakers and two rear speakers. Mounted all four speakers on the ceiling in out basement.

Puts out decent bass, defineately loud.

You're a college student, don't put much money into things that people are going to party around. We put up a nice wall around the furnace in out basement (put a lot of work into it) and the first party we had some douche punched a hole in it.

If you get nice bookshelf/floor standing speakers, people will spill drinks on them, kick and punch them, puke on them, and maybe even try to climb them.

If you get a good 2/4 channel reciever to go along with those speakers, people will do the same.

If you want loud + good + cheap look on craigslist for a cheap early 90's home stereo reciever and speakers.

How did you spend alot of time/effort on building a WALL?

Ususally it takes a few 2x4's and some drywall + screws.

      Toolbag.

For what you're talking about, I'd look into an onkyo receiver. They are really nice for the price

            and 2 - 4 speakers like this
Big enough that no one will knock them over, and sound good enough

I'm assuming I'd be better off building my own system?
              Buying seperate speakers and recievers?
I've installed my own car audio system but I know this is a bit different.
What about 2 floor standing speakers and a reciever?
4 cheaper floor standing speakers and a receiever?
What is a typical setup like?

All you really need is a receiver/amp and speakers that can take the wattage. College is not the time to buy quality AV gear. For parties, I wouldn't care if I even support Stereo sound.

However, I am actually curious about decent receivers, as I am in the market.

ebay ceiling mount speakers - can get 5 of them for like 200.00, they are big, and put out a pretty damned good amoutn of sound, and you can mount one as a SUB in a built out box in the ceiling

That wall cost me $30.00 in materials and an afternoon of drunken labor.

Then some cock decided to get drunker than me and punch a hole into it when I wasn't even there to defend my baby.

You would have been pissed too.

For this hypothetical 'party' setup; 2 channel receiver with two floor standing speakers matched to its output.

Buy it used, buy it together or separate; doesn't matter. Just make sure you match your speakers to your recievers output just like car audio. Just remember home audio is mostly 8 ohms.

3/4 treated plywood under the drywall will easily stop any further problems. I've learned the hard way.
