    Manny being Manny...

Major League Baseball announced Thursday that Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez has been suspended for 50 games for violating its drug policy.

Feel like this may end up hurting MLB as much as Alex Rodriguez did-- two guys out of right field (pun intended ) that had strong positive images. Ouch.

Also, as a result, I move that Boston be stripped of the 04 and 07 titles

I'm going with Manny truly not knowing the steroid was in there...though taking a form of estrogen is kinda bizarre by itself.

I did note that Manny didn't try to fight it, but quietly accepted the 50 game suspension.

Dodgers are still winnning without him, which shows they are a strong team and he is a good asset, but not essential for the win.

My understanding is that two things happened:

First, he was tested in spring training and showed very high levels of testosterone (testing is done on the ratio of testosterone to something called epitestosterone; normal levels in males is around 1:1, Manny was in the range of 4:1-10:1). An IOC lab then did some sort of study to determine if the extra testosterone was natural or artificial, and through whatever means they determined it was artificial.

If it was left at that, Manny was going to appeal the suspension and that process would've played out. However, as a result of his contract and the union's agreement with the league, MLB is entitled to dig through players' medical records. They did that, and found the prescription for hCG, which is the drug Manny was tossed for. hCG is a female fertility drug that is also used by males to restart natural, testicular testosterone production after cycling off use of artificial testosterone (roids).

I guess as a result of the secondary usage of hCG, it's on the MLB banned substance list. Evidence of a prescription for a banned substance is grounds for disciplinary action... so now, no Manny until early July.

My source for the above is an article I read today (actually a decent read)- http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4159870
