Whats a good book for vacation?

Hey guys, going on vacation in a week and I am all caught up on my usual authors, any ideas?? here is the usual to give you an idea of what I like.

Dan Brown- Da Vinci code, etc.
R.A. Salvatore- Drizzt, Cadderly, etc.
Michael Crichton- Jurassic Park, etc.
Chris Paolini- Eragon series

Not really feeling like Harry Potter, or Twilight, or any of the big mainstreams that the teens and tweens like. Feeling more of a Science tech thriller or something of the sort right now.

Enders Game by Orson Scott Card

Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard. If you ignore the politics that the book will invariably dredge up when you discuss it publically, its a pretty darn entertaining scifi book. Just never ever ever see the movie.

Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein.

I have heard about Enders Game before, even read the back title at the book store. I might pick it up for the summer.

Battlefield Earth brings up mental pictures of John travolta with a Rasta 'do.... havent seen the movie though, dont plan too.
I didnt know that L. Ron Hubbard wrote it, but I guess he was a science fiction writer too wasn't he....

Any other good ones?

Thats a pretty new one, I saw it come up on one of my searches on half.com. Sounds a bit reminiscent of Mad Max, and thats not a bad thing. Big fan here!

Anything by Ludlam is fun. Slow, but fun.

Dale brown for Military thriller. Should be able to find his stuff at 1/2 price easy.

There Will Be Dragons by John Ringo. That's Sci-Fi -> Fantasy. Amusing.

John Travolta destroyed that movie.

And L. Ron Hubbard was a decent scifi writer in his day, I wouldn't call him particularly good. But Battlefield Earth is definitely worth reading. Its pretty entertaining.

If you want good scifi, read Heinlein. A lot of his books get weird and creepy (not in a good way), and his earlier books are pulp fiction, but there is a lot of quality in there. Moon is a Harsh Mistress is my favorite, but Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, etc are all good.

The Harry Potter series is actually pretty good. The first two are pretty young focused, but it gets a lot better after in book 4 and 5.

Heinlein has a lot of good stuff. Stranger in a Strange Land is great (and a classic). The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and The Cat Who Walks Through Walls too.

If you are a Star Wars fan there a ton of good books in that Universe. The New Jedi Order series is good (19 books in that sub-series).

Dune Series

The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings

Douglas Adams: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy (all five books).

Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Jeff Lindsay)

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Philip K. Dick

Black Sunday, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs (Thomas Harris)

A guy named Stephen R. Donaldson wrote a sci fi series years ago , I thought it was very good , Have you read the gunslinger series ( Twin Towers ?) by Stephen King , also good sci fi

I know vacation/airplane books are different from "serious" books.

That said, Heinlein is awesome; and The Moon is A Harsh Mistress is my favorite book to recommend from him.

Also think highly of PKD, Rushdie, Vonnegut, Pynchon, Gibson, Banks, Stephenson, etc.
