boxer puppy. Advice?

Well after months of bugging the parents (i'm only 18, still live at home) They have decided to let me buy a boxer puppy. My dads friend breeds them and is giving me about half price on a male brindle. He wont be ready for pickup until the end of this month or first week in august. So, what are some things I should do to prepare, should i do obedience school for him? I heard boxers are stubborn and tough to train. I mean I have had my share of puppies before. But they were easy to train. And none of them were indoor dogs. The boxer will be staying in my house. I also have a huge backyard for him when he gets bigger and needs some room to run. Basically just looking to see if anyone owns a boxer and would hve done anything different to prepare for it. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

I think the best "obedience" school is coming from the OWNER.... meaning teach your pup the way you want him to be. It's as much about the person learning from the animal as it is the animal learning from the person.

No animal is hard headed any more than the next one. It's all a matter of finding out how he takes it the best.

Good choice on the brindle by the way... one of my favorites... Though I'm not partial to boxers as I don't like the way the bottom jaw sticks out.

Best of luck either way... oh... and if you don't want something chewed up keep it under lock and key!

Haha yeah. It was brindle male or no dog for me. So when I first talked to the guy he told me $500..Then my dad called and he told him $250..So I am getting a decent deal on him. Pretty excited about it. ive been doing a lot of google research on them. and it basically sounds like they will be tough to train. but I have alot of free time since i broke my back. No work for the next year atleast.

The boxer I had was a wander in , he just showed up one day , was a full grown male , within a month he would do anything I ask , he could be a half mile from the house & when I called him he would come as fast as he could come & pile up at my feet , one of the best dogs I ever had

Advice for a boxer pup? Hide everything/anything that can be chewed. They are mischevious little buggers and high energy too. They get bored easy so have lots of different toys (ropes, kongs, bones, etc.) to keep him occupied.

haha i will be sure and NOT mention that to my mom. She hated the last dog I had because it liked to chew on things..Even the house ..Going to be a long wait for him. I am sure it will be worth it tho.

I have a dark brindle 2 year old male boxer.I have had him since he was 8 weeks old. He is the best dog I have ever had. He is very friendly and loves kids. Its very important to socialize puppies take him every where you can to meet new dogs, people, new situatons being a cute puppy every one is going to want to pet him any way. My wife is a kindergarten teacher and I take him in to school so the kids can see him. He gets along with other dogs except he doesn't get along with other male Boxers. Thier guard dog instincts start to kick in when they are around a year old. He is very protective of the house and my wife. The problem with training boxers is they don't learn like a lab. You have to be patient and not try to push them. Mine really started to listen well enough to trust him off his leash when he got to be about a year old and not be in a crate at home during the day. They need ALOT of exercise or they can be a real hand full. They can have allergies too mine is alergic to bee stings. He got stung last summer and his face swelled up like a sharpe' in like 30 min.. That was a $100 vet bill and $100 exterminator bill to get rid of the bees . Not mention the $100 vet bill I had the week before when he tangled with a woodchuck. It bit him through the tung. You wouldn't believe how much that bled. Good luck with him they are great dogs.

Fromer owner of two lovely boxer ladys will get pics asap. training is like other breeds (little tougher mine were both deaf) HIDE NICE SHOES you know real leather. stable language with them and ask the breeder what the parents were like to train gives good results for me.

I really like that color XM. I wouldn't mind a reverse brinle either haha. I am going down tomorrow morning to put my down payment in. Now for a name..I am getting a male, and am thinking about the name Titus for him..any other ideas?

We get compliments on what a good looking dog he is all the time. Its not very common in this area to see reverse brindle Boxers. When he was a puppy people used to ask us all the time if he was a pit pull. He has filled out from the last pic. He is about 80lbs and built like a weight lifter. I wanted to crop his ears but my wife didn't want to make him go through that.

He is a VERY good looking dog. And I don't think I will crop the ears on mine either. Seems like a waste of money to me. Does anything have to be done with their tails though? I see some people do something with them. Also how are they in the snow . Up here we get up to 5 feet of snow in one storm. He will be an indoor dog. In our heated house. Good size house, so he will have plenty of room. but he will need to go outside sometime. So do they hate the snow? Or can they just not be left out there alone for along time like a regular dog.

They usually dock thier tails pretty much right after they are born. Mine loves to run and dig in the snow. He also likes swimming. You just have to keep in mind they have short thin coats so we have a coat for ours when the weather is cold enough that you would wear a heavy coat. They also don't like warm weather their short muzzle makes it harder for them to cool off like longer muzzeled dogs. They need to be indoor dogs.

I found with my whippet mix (since gone) and my pointer / australian shepherd mix that a doggy door and a doggy room are your best friend. I don't like crates cause I'm gone long periods of time. So he has his own room with axcess to his own fenced in area outside. When I'm gone he simply hangs out there and is allowed in the house when I'm there and awake. Solves the chewing / destructive issues - though I had to replace the walls and floor in that room because of the whippet (could not handle being alone).

Down payment made..Either a reverse brindle or a regular brindle. One has already been called. So I might just end up with a fawn colored one. I will be happy with either. Now I start the lllonnngggg month wait. I am just counting down the nights of a good sleep I get haha. My sleep cycle is shot from when I worked overnights. My bed time is from 4:00AM till about 12:00PM. Doubt I will get to do that anymore. I hear they like to get up early when they are little.
