Using a 50mm Canon prime on a Rebel XSI?

For the purposes that I was looking to employ this lens, yes I will need a tripod. I'm using it in low light situations where I do NOT want to use a flash because the lighting looks un-natural. I want to be able to keep the shutter open to absorb as much natural light as possible. Of course this is done mostly on still objects.

If you crank the ISO up a bit, and shoot wide open, you can shoot with like a shutter speed of 1/10 or less and still get good results with a short light lens in pretty low light.

Of course, if you are leaving the shutter open for a length of time, you need to use a tripod (and a remote shutter release and mirror lock-up).

i use a 50d with the standard 18-135 IS 3.5-5.6 kit lens because it covers everything i ever need.

and I see no need for primes, none of my photos ever are printed large enough to be able to see the true quality of a prime. If you are not going to be printing larger than 8x5 or anything slightly larger, you really dont need on IMHO

Also, primes have much better bokeh.

Good luck shooting inside, or at dusk, or at night, or or or or or... primes absolutely serve a purpose, if for no other reason than providing a cheap(er) wide-aperture option. As a photojournalist I really can't survive using any lens that isn't capable of shooting at f/2.8, or preferably even faster.

(God bless my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, I love that thing.)

I have not played with is personally, but apparently the 50mm f1.0L was pretty much useless at anything wider than f2.0. That's why they reengineered it as an f1.2 but sharp at f1.2 (gets better as you stop it down a bit, but totally usable at f1.2). If Lecia can get 11k for a f.95 why can't we get more crazy fast glass?

Yeah, there were a lot of complaints about the f/1L. I still think it would be fun to play with just for fun.
