I'm set in the .357 Department (aside from some hogues or pachmayrs)

Im looking at the XDm or M&P in .40sw - From what i've shot in the past, i've done best with a couple of guns chambered in.40sw, and i dont nescessarily want a 1911 just yet...

And yes, plans to eventually CC.

      Nice hardware

A .40 should do you well. Look into a .357Sig as far as caliber also. It is similar to a .40, but is a bit snapper. The round has better ballistics and penetration due to the higher velocity. It is usually about the same price as .40 ammo too. The nice thing is that with some manufacturers you can switch between calibers with a switch of the barrel (Sig is like this for several models). Other manufacturers require a change to the barrel and recoil spring. Sometimes you cannot go from a firearm designed for .40 to firing a .357 though (the higher pressure of the .357 can cause accelerated wear on parts designed solely for the .40). Anyway, if you can find what you are looking for in .357 but not .40 go for it. Either one will be more than enough for 2LV, and both are plenty of fun. I got to shoot a Sig P229 in .357Sig as a part of my internship this summer and loved it. I shot that better than I've shot any other handgun. I also got to shoot an MG/SBR, so I want to move to a state that allows various FA toys someday

I went the wrong way and got a 1911 clone as my first hand cannon. Now I wish I hadn't, despite LOVING my 1911. I should have started off with something a bit smaller and learned how to shoot a handgun well first. Oh well, maybe next time I am in the market for my first handgun I'll do it right

I'm thinking about an HK Compact in 9mm; my dad shoots a full frame USP, but I think I'd like the smaller frame. Any thoughts?

Is there any particular reason for your desiring the smaller frame/compact model? I think nutnfancy did a table-top of the USP compact. Give that a watch, as he usually does a solid job reviewing things.

If you're not worried about stopping power, then you're looking for a range gun. If you're looking for a range gun, why get one thats going to be harder to hold, and harder to aim.

Full size pistols are going to be far easier to control than a compact. Also, Shoot before you buy. I like the looks of HK's but i've never shot one. I hear the mag release sucks, they're kinda heavy, and i know for a fact, you're paying for a name. (also, the rails on the front is proprietary, gonna need a bulky and unsightly adapter, at yet again, added cost.

did you really just allude to Nutnfancy being credible? youtube 'sumptinfancy' and you'll find a great parody.

I went to the range tonight and rented some guns. I've been torn between the M&P and the XDm - I have to say, i like them both equally. I think the M&P had some nicer sights, but they only had a M&P compact, and i can say it wasnt as comfy as the XDM, and the slide release was kinda in a bad spot, and hard to push....

I have to say i really like them both, and at this point, im gonna lean towards the XDm, just becuase it was my gut-reaction as far as the two have gone - But, at this point, if i find a killer deal on an M&P, i might just have to snag that up.

I'm not saying I agree with everything he says or that he is right, I'm just saying he does a decently informative review and comparison. It is not really fair to knock him on his reviews because guns are so subjective. He gives a reason for every opinion and you can take it for what it is worth. I cannot really say that I've seen him say something that was particularly unfair.

Youtubed it and did not find it. It corrected my spelling showed me a music video
EDIT: found it. Not my cup of tea.
