    Lady Gaga...

So I was donating money to cancer charities via my cable bill last night (you make a small donation and get an On-Demand music video) and came across "Lady Gaga". Now I'd heard the vaguely slutty sort of catchy electronica that she creates on the radio before, so after spending $7.50 I figured I might as well check out her music videos which were included with the package.

Needless to say, my mind was blown. Roughly 3 minutes in I was extremely confused, slightly turned on, and bopping my head back and forth like one of those idiots in A Night at the Roxbury. The music is not my bag of chips, but can I sort of see the appeal of the mostly naked chick in the platinum blonde wig moaning "poke her face" and rolling around on a couch. As for the rest of the video, I'm at a complete loss

Anyway, I did a little digging and found this:

Makes slightly more sense than the actual videos.

It's a new world. "Poke Her Face" is a ladylike, because at least you're not poking something else

True, but when the "lady" is capable of poking, its a bit of a turn off.

Lady GaGa is awesome for many reasons. One, she writes her own music (she began writing music for many others such as Britney Spears and the like). Two, she's a performance artist. Her stuff she makes is electronica and dance music, but her videos and fashion are where she brings out the artist in herself. My wife showed me her videos and my first reaction was "The chick is gonna be a star." Some people have the IT factor and some don't. She has IT (whatever IT is). I was actually surprised to find she's from da Bronx, because her influences and styling seem much more European to me. Either way, I dig her stuff because she does it exactly how she wants to and doesn't care how odd she seems. Artists (myself included) are like that. We make art for ourselves and if others enjoy it, so much the better.

Anyway...if you watch her stuff and think of performance art when you do, it makes a lot more sense.

That video was hilarious! And what made it even better was that there were hot chics with big fun-bags!

                    (I like fun-bags more than I like pie... )

Don't be silly, the only thing better than pie is snatch(grips, of course)!

I love the first line "It's the future and everything is weird /Check out this guy he has a metal beard." It totally sums up the imagery from 90% of her videos, with the line "Random stuff / Random stuff / Tell me have you had enough?" covering the other 10%.

I guess if you look at as performance art it has its merits... To me, growing up between Harvard Square, Northampton and Ashbury Park, almost any sort of "avante-garde imagery-based performance art" just blends into the wallpaper unless it's truly unique. I have to say, one of my favorite bands in the late 90s was Mindless Self Indulgence (before they went all Hot-Topic-y in 2005, which they told us was coming). They'd get on stage dressed how they want, play what they want, and do what they want (snort pixie sticks, piss on the audience, stick cookies in their butts, tattoo eachother, etc) and it was really sort of brilliant in a dadaist way, much like their music.

I have no words of value to bring to this thread, except that I'm glad the GaGa-Hole stole my 300th post virginity.

Even IF it involved a metal beard

Well yea she's certainly not a musician. Her act has about as much to do with music as cooking has to do with farming.

I dunno... In one of her music videos she was very close to french kissing a great dane. Maybe she was getting him excited for breeding?
