Work Related - I have to vent

    I'm superbly ticked off.

As many of you might know, I work for the Department of Corrections. I just completed 16 hours of "training" - training that in my opinion, completely negates the very reason for a prison or jail system.

Our facility is actively moving towards "IBM" - Inmate Behavioral Management. This theory replaces the "housing them [only]" mentality with a "give them stuff to do for rewards" ideology. In my opinion, we are going to reward them for doing what they are supposed to do in the first place. The facility rules are spelled out in the inmate handbook. My opinion - follow them or be reprimanded. Their opinion - reward them for voluntary compliance.

Another aspect of this IBM is to "walk around and get to know them [the inmates]. Be friendly to them. Ask them how their day is going" WHAT!?? i don't WANT to know them. I didn't come to this job to make friends with criminals...and I could give two CRAPSs how their day is going.

The idea surrounds "give them goals to work for"...like cleaning blocks/housing units and reward them with late-nights, pizza parties and all that crap. Why? "To reduce the amount of incidents in the facility."

Two housing units, one male, one female, are already on this program and they claim "it's working perfectly." Their theory is flawed and they skew their reasons. At the time they introduced this "new idea", we, on SRT, completed our training with Taser and FN303 devices. Both Taser and 303s had been deployed on inmates several times during the introduction of this new "IBM" idea.

First and foremost, female inmates tend to be more compliant to instruction because of gender. This is not to say anything stereotypical or slanderous towards women. Their housing units are staffed with female officers but when 'back-up' is called, male officers respond...male officers who have demonstrated that regardless of the inmate's gender, we will force compliance one way or another. Female inmates are treated no differently than male inmates because REGARDLESS of gender, genuine threats are always present.

Male inmates on the other hand, are some of the most aggressive individuals due to testosterone and size. We use force on a weekly basis. When we had to run into a cell unarmed, people got hurt. Now that we have LL devices at our disposal, minimum incidents - and thus injuries - have been reported.

The administrators think their compliance is due to the IBM dung - we maintain it's because they [the inmates] now know we have [and will use] the pain-compliance devices we now posses.

In their clouded judgement, the next "block" to get the IBM is the diaper sniper block. That's right...child molesters.

I have a HUGE problem with this. How would the victims, the victim's families feel if/when they found out that their attackers/accused attackers are now getting pizza parties, late nights, "movie" nights - for doing what they were supposed to be doing in the first place?

After the molesters, it's the Max unit. These are 60 of the most violent offenders we have. Their charges include rape, drug delivery, homicide, gang related violence and assault to [police] officers [among others]. Throw them a party? Are you effing nuts???

RHU - these are the a-holes that we can't even put on the Max unit. give them more out time? Are you freaking kidding me???

Our job is Care, Custody and Control....not Creatively Coddle the Criminal.
We are to oversee them with Fair, Firm and Consistent attitudes...not Fondle the Flagrant Criminal.

    Bull.

To make it worse, the Director [unofficially] threatened our jobs by saying "This is the system we are moving to. Those of you who actively resist this system will be dealt with accordingly."

    What?!?

Ok Director...so when you are standing on a block, taken hostage with a 6" shank to your throat, I should be polite and ask them to put it down and I'll get them a slice of Pizza? Why don't we just hand them the effing jail keys while we are at it?

God, I HATE pacifist, inmate coddling, feel-good Liberals [that's what our administration is] who think NOTHING about security for the officers and staff.

I did an internship with the Illinois Department of Corrections while in grad school. I worked in a business office, but regularly spoke with facility managers and correctional officers. It never ceased to amaze me the apparent disconnect between administrators and staff; we had some genius appointee inquire as to the possibility of turning off lights in the prison to save money. Seriously?

Personally I think the higher-ups would benefit from walking a few cell blocks a few weeks out of the year, get god-knows-what thrown at them, maybe do an extraction or two, and really reflect on how supposed "best-practices" are really going to make things better for some of the worst elements of society.

so next they are replacing batons with foam fingers and while doing your rounds you must wear clown costumes, oh and your pain-compliance devices are being replaced with water squirting flowers and hand buzzers

that is a joke, so basically what you are saying is its time to do something against the law cause well its cheap housing with pizza parties, late nights, movies and all the sodomy you can handle sounds like a party to me

This kind of crap needs to go public, if the victims knew... It already pisses me off that they get free education while i work my butt off.

              Carrot and stick.

Increasing the carrot does not decrease the stick, it just decreases the likelihood of having to use it.

Since I'm not allowed [by the Job] to take it to the newspapers, this is my only way of getting it out.

I disagree. Give them a carrot at dinner but nothing but their solitude after it.

I don't care if they are comnfy in prison...prison should NOT be a resort. They failed to comply with the law and are being punished....so let it be punishing to be in prison.

Druid i agree with you 100% prison is punishment. Not happy fun time, you guys do some of the dirtiest work there is and do a good job of it. Bring the administrators out with you guys for a shift or two. Then see what their opinion ends up as.

The mere act of taking away the freedom to leave is punishment. I mean look at it this way. Even on the outside of the cell (most of the time) how much would it suck if you had to be there for years on end?

I know that you will never find it in some people, but deep down I believe all people have good in them. Somewhere these people have the ability to bring positive to the world. The current prison system is not working to help them do that. Maybe its because its too soft, maybe its because we treat them like animals when they are in?

/Not involved with prisoners on a daily basis, not a victim of violent crime against myself or loved ones. Views may be skewed by luxury of not being in the situation.

You're speaking about people which used their freedoms to act like animals. Thus they were/are caged like animals and treated like animals. Stupid games get stupid prizes.

Do you go to prison when you are 4? or 6 or 12? NO! You go when you are AN ADULT! You have had several years to figure out what is right and what is illegal and unlawful in this world. You chose to violate those laws and so therefore you go to PRISON!!! NOT DISNEYLAND!!!!

And this Druid is just another reason why I refuse to do LE work... I can't and won't do that. I'd drop an anonymous letter... Don't worry, I won't tell... to some major news feeds.. and not just in your area.. but crap like good morning america and what not.... just a hint... don't spell it all out... as you gotta make them want more carrot... as the phrase is used.

Good luck and be safe... You could also make a correlation that the reason the incidents went down was the same as those in Maricopa county went down... it wasn't because of the pizza parties!!!

If it has ANY positive effect on post release behavior, they can throw the inmates birthday parties too.

I have to agree with Druid on this one. When i was thinking about it i figured if i wanted a life where everything was supplied for me i could choose the military or i could choose to be a criminal and go to prison. The sad thing is at this point it sounds like you get treated better and have better perks as an inmate. I could see how a system like this could backfire. An inmate gets released and tries to adjust to normal life and is not able to, they will reflect on the perks they had back at prison and find a way to go back. The previous system they would reflect on and most often think i dont want to go back there.

Well being ex military, it's often been said that inmates have a much better life than active folks do. I mean they get a free gym membership, 3 meals a day, and a warm, or cool climate controlled bed to sleep on. So they can't leave huh? How many of you have ever left a ship that's sitting 500 miles from the nearest piece of dry land on down around the equator? BTW, the equator don't have a winter...

I also know that the quality of food served in prison is better than the CRats that the military have to eat. The prison food has to meet "quality standards" which after one of the wars some of the MRE's and such were sent to a prison and they couldn't be served to the inmates because they didn't meet nutritional standards. And yes, I may know what I'm talking about as my mother and a few of my friends are/were guards at max/med/min places.

I think the whole point is to make it hell to be in prison not a vacation. I mean think about it.... you aren't required to pay your bills when you are in prison... why? because you are unable to work. So no one can touch anything. Sure you don't have a job, but who cares? You don't have to pay for anything.. grrrrr.. and the people that come up with all this crap are safely 50+ miles away from any facility and only see the insides of them two or three times a year... what a crock!!!

                              Best of luck Druid...
