ebay is killing itself, give it a few years and it'll be like MS paying Verizon to force Android phones to use Bing instead of google search. This btw is not made up.

Off topic, but I don't see what the big deal about the Bing thing is. And it wasn't just Android phones, they did it to my Blackberry too.

It's not like they blocking google search, they're just making Bing the default. It can be changed in about 10 seconds.

On Android google search was removed. There is no option to change it back. On a google phone the search is built into the phone. Almost everything from the web to your phone book can be searched. That and bings sucks.

Did this just happen? The Droid 2 phones we're testing at work are on verizon and still have google search functionality.

Which would make sense because the Android operating system was... developed by Google.

Yes I know, but Bornl33t is saying that Verizon is removing google search and replacing it with Bing.

This happened on blackberry a long time ago...after an update my phone all of a sudden had bing search installed but I can still use my google search apps and stuff. I thought that's what he was referring to since I think VZW did that on all their phones. They also do the dirty and underhanded tactic of disabling the GPS chip from working with any software but their VZ Navigator crap that costs 10 bucks a month. All they make available for other apps is the much less precise cell tower location system.

I've googled around a bit and can only find a few references to this happening with the Samsung Galaxy android phone, and some possible threats to do it to all android phones in the future.

It seems odd to me that Verizon would even be able to extract google search from Android considering Google developed it. It's pretty core to the phone's functionality. If this really is true I'm going to have to rethink my plans for a Droid 2.

Why must EVERY cell phone company out there be so machiavellian?

I believe Bing is on Verizon Blackberries and whatever the new mid-range Android device is (note, though, that whatever that phone is does not have "Droid" branding). It looks like they're leaving the high end stuff unmolested.

Also, most Verizon phones have GPS unlocked (and have for a while)

I understand what he's SAYING, but that would seem to be speculation based on his observations, or the fact that he accidentally changed his search features.

With a Droid X, a brand new Devour, a Droid 2, Blackberry (old, trackball) and some sort of HTC thing (no name on it) sitting here, it would seem only the Blackberry and the HTC thing use Bing. Just saying.... To me that would suggest that Motorola phones running Android utilize Google, even on Verizon. I'll let you know if mine or anyone elses changes, but I doubt it will.

                      One word.

                      T-Mobile.

                      The original Android phone company.

I am hooked into the Android 2.2 wifi hotspot on my phone, typing this from my laptop.
                      Yep, no charge from TMO.

I am one of the prebuy original G1 buyers in 2008.
Nothing but Android will work now for me.

Torn between the G2 and the My Touch HD coming out this month.
I like the G2 because it has vanilla Android which will get updates faster than the MTHD
because of the T-Mobile Expresso UI overlay.
Even though it can be disabled it will still slow updates down.

But both phones will be HSPA+ phones (the new faster than 4G internet).

No it's not going to change current phones. ONly new releases and according to a Verizon press release it's not going to be all of them. The Samsung Fascinate is the first one. The change is hardwired in the rom and there is no option to change it. The ONLY way around it is to root the phone and even that hasn't been fully developed yet.

Er, no because the HTC phone was a software update from Google as a default to Bing... Sorry?

it's not all android phones, but they are forcing Bing on some of the newer ones, and removing the option of using google. (except of course, for going to google.com in your browser)
