thehead, i dont know what the area you live at looks like but i drive almost 40 minutes to work and 25 to college. i could not get by without my car.

i have also never been in any accident, no ticket, warning, nothing. and i have been driving for 3 years.

a lot of people are bad drivers. move the age to 18 and you'll have older inexperienced drivers. move the age to 30 and youll have even older inexperienced drivers.

is there a problem? yes. can it be fixed with more laws and regulations? maybe, but probably not. personal safety and responsiblilty is just that - personal. people need to protect themselves and drive responsibly. 'peer-pressure' is an excuse for the weak.

Here it 16 for permit and 17 for license. magadeath, that would kinda reward all the drinkers out there in a way doing underage drinking. but people like me who dont drink its kind of a punishment by having to wait 3 extra years because people dont know how to act responsible.

I dont see whats so different about the present day laws vs 4 years ago or so when I got mine? Wat are you complaining about. Its pretty much the same and I didnt seem to mind at all. Tell you the truth the behind the wheel courses are BS and drivers ed only taught me a few things other than the good pointers our teacher told us himself. I didn't think I was ready enough to drive after the pathetic few hours behind that wheel that I had. I think the longer time you have behind the wheel with say a parent and doing short trip to the supermarket is way more useful than any of that junk that is required.
Va is one of the dumb states that still has their driving age so low. Many states have already pushed it to 18. so ha! quite whining and deal with mummy driving you to the movies

There's also some restrictions in B.C. Canada

          1) you take a written test and get your learners.
          - with your learners you must display this red "L" sign on your vehicle and can only drive during the day with only 1 adult...only 1.
          2) after 6 months you take your drivers test
          - after passing you get another sign, a green "N" to display on your car, with only 1 restriction...no alcohol.
          3) after 15 months you take another test
          - finally sfter passing you get your real license.

Laws are worse in NJ now. It's always been permit at 16, and real license at 17. When you had your permit, you were only allowed one passenger in the car, who had to be a licensed driver with at least 3 years experience. You could only drive between sunrise and sunset, as well.

Now its get your permit at 16, with the same restrictions as above, and then at 17 you get another permit, which is slightly less restrictive, and then you get your real license at 18.

I think it affects everyone born after 1984. My brother just escaped it.

But personally, I see no need for most people to get their license at that age in most situations. I personally didn't get my license till after my first year of college. In high school, commuting by train was a better idea. Anyone out there, think of how tired the average 16-17 year old is in the morning when they wake up for school. Then compound that with a relative lack of driving experience. I don't want that on the road. Then I lived at college and didn't need a car, campus being in the middle of downtown Newark. (Hooray for the ghetto!)

The point of my rambling is don't rush a license so you can drive your girlfriend to parties or something like that. Thats only going to lead to drunk driving or something else. Wait until you actually have a legitimate need for the car.

I think that they should do something, but I don't really see the point in raising the age. I mean, a 16 year old retard isnt going to be any better in a year, he'll just be older; experience is everything.

I know FULL WELL what a 16-18 year old driver is like. Guys especially... have the tendency to drive too fast and do stupid things. I don't exclude myself from this bunch... Took me a year to figure out how to lay off the gas pedal... and I can't say I'm proud of how I drove sometimes. (I'm much better now)

                  Those are good rules.
