    Any computer guys here?

I want to set up dual monitors, key boards, mice. How far can you run wires without issue?
I don't want to go wireless, and I don't want to setup another computer and use PC Anywhere.

What type of connector is on the monitor? 15 pin VGA? HDMI? Displayport? DVI?

Assuming the keyboard and mouse are USB yes?

    UPDATE:
USB can go a max of 16 feet in a stretch. If you need to go more than that, you have to start adding in powered hubs.

I've run up to 100 ft on vga cables for tv/ monitor mirroring. Check out monoprice for good deals on items for this. Can go even further on Powered extenders.

LOL, if I actually knew those terms I would probably be able to answer my own question.
It's a new computer (HP) mouse and keyboard is USB.
I googled the 15 pin VGA and that is what I have, how ever now that I look at the back of my computer, there is only one 15 pin VGA port, will that limit me to just one monitor?

Yeah - without 2 ports, you only get one monitor.

I may have put the cart before the horse.
What I'm trying to do is hook my office computer to my CNC mill in the shop via RS232, but it looks like my computer does not have that port either. From the information I'm reading I need either a 9 or 25 pin RS232 port on the back of my computer and all I have available is the DVI port.

Looks like I would need a new computer to do what I'm attempting, which is access to the office computer from the shop floor. My software runs on a dongle with a single seat, so I'm stuck on one computer. I guess 2 computers cant be avoided for what I need.

SO, If I get the correct new office computer can I network them VIA hard wire avoiding wireless and PC Anywhere? If I route my cables through the walls, into the attic and then to the shop, I'm at about 65 feet in all.

I'm trying to keep all the software and NC files on the office computer, but access both from the shop computer for editing and re sending files back to the CNC machine. All machining files I want sent to the machine from my office computer, not the shop computer.

              Does that make sense?

You can throw in a PCI serial card to add the RS232 com to your PC: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815158001

Much less expensive than a new pc.

Also, it sounds like you don't need two separate monitor outputs; you can just use a splitter since all you are doing is duplicating the same output: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812200766

But like I said I'm looking at about 65 feet of wiring (?)

(But thanks for that info, it's good to know)

A KVM extender over ethernet would work, but the cost will go up.

The KVM looked like the solution until I saw prices, wow!

Yeah a KVM would be your best option and you can get an older style one for cheap like this one:

                        http://www.ebay.com/itm/Belkin-OmniV...item2589fb8e04

Or a newer one that takes USB:

                        http://www.ebay.com/itm/BELKIN-acces...item20df4364dc

Then just get something like this to switch between computers in the shop:

You will still need a splitter at your office computer to go to the monitor and to send a video signal to the shop. The CAT5 can go up to about 500' so you should be good stringing it wherever you want it to go. All that is still cheaper then a new computer and you wouldn't have to install all the software and stuff all over again.

CONTROL TWO PCS VIA ONE MONITOR, KEYBOARD AND MOUSE
I wouldn't need this in the shop, the CNC computer is not part of the equation except receiving data from the office computer.

oh so you want to control the CNC machine from the office? If you just need to transfer data then just network them together so you can access the same files on both computers. Thats pretty easy if they are both hooked up to the internet. Just make a folder on your office computer and right click on it and change the sharing option. If your CNC machine is also windows based then you can access that file from there. Is that what you are looking to do? Just share files between computers? Networking is free.

The cnc machine control (computer) is not part of the equation. It's a stand alone computer that controls the machine center. It will receive the G-code from the office computer via RS232 cable, that's it. It is not a windows based computer, it is a CNC control. Like I said my CNC CAD/CAM is a single seat software program and can only be used on one computer, that computer is in my office not the shop. I need to have access to the CAD/CAM software while I'm in the shop so I dont have to run back and forth between the office and shop editing, reviewing jobs etc, etc, etc.

I can either network two computers or I can use the parts that have been mentioned here and run a duel monitor/mouse/key board which I'm currently looking into. I'm currently looking for a 65 foot all-in-one KVM cable and I'll be good to go with my shopping list
