Willing to spend more money eh? Hehe. New list:

Same Amp I had listed earlier: $190

HU: (I do not recommend an MP3 one if you have a 'good' system. MP3 compression cuts out sounds not humanly perceptible. However, your equipment is sensitive to this and will be affected.)

      Alpine CDM-7871 - $229

Sub: Crystal Mobile Sound 12" - I have one of these that I won in a contest. I swear by these subs. It has EXCELLENT SQ and is also puts out HUGE, did I mention GARGANTUAN? SPLs... if that's your thing. It weighs 30lbs, impressive sub. Get this one if you can! I also recommend a separate mono amp dedicated for this sub... if you want to plan to push it to full ridiculous earthshaking potential, attact police, and give people outside the car opportunity to go deaf too. But for normal listening you should not do this anyway... you can tie it into the 4 channel amp and be fine - just don't push the sub unreasonably as it will be underpowered. (Pushing a sub that's underpowered is a good way to break something)

      http://www.mmxpress.com/crystal/crystal_subwoofers.htm - $250

      Sealed Box (Use 1.2-2.10 cu ft): http://www.mmxpress.com/boxes.htm - $75
I'm a fan of sealed boxes. They are not as loud as ported/bandpass or whatever... but great for SQ.

      Fronts: CDT Cambrias CAX-600
      - $139

      Rear Fill: Kenwood 6x9s

Rear fills aren't very important so you don't need to get expensive... cheaper the better as long as they are decent, usually you fade them out so they don't stand out. Infinity, Polk, Alpine... whatever, these are all fine for rear fill. - $76

      Wiring Kit - Approx $40

      Approx price: $1000

This of course is over what you said what you wanted to spend. What you might want to do is look stuff over and figure out what you really don't think you need... depending on tastes. That sub is one big stinkin sub... you can easily cut about $100 and get a cheaper sub that works very well and will make you happy. The Fronts... could go with Polk DX-6's or something and cut $40 or so.

Just don't skimp on your amp... get as good an amp as you can afford. I would skimp on things in this order: Sub/rear fills, fronts, HU, Amp.

if you order from crutchfield trust me you can install it yourself. i had never installed a stereo before but i installed a head unit and speakers myself that i ordered from crutchfield. i know i never would have been able to do it without their instructions. there were so many stupid tabs and screws in weird places. but the instructions are very detailed telling you exactly how to do everything. if you like i can try to find them and e-mail you a scan so you can see how easy they make it. if you buy kenwood you can get it from crutchfield. i personally have all kenwood stuff. basically the cheapest stuff i could get that was decent. crap car that i don't intend to keep long so i wasn't gonna spend a whole lot on the system. sound quality is pretty good but the bass never really gets loud. no subs. even as it is the mirrors shimmer though. that's with 4" fronts and 6x9 rears. ok enough about crutchfield. it's just that you mentioned self installation and that's where crutchfield really kicks ***. besides their site and customer service.
