Best Buy is your best bet to get the retail version. Another option is to buy Half Life and download the mod from www.counter-strike.net This way you have Half Life and can download other mods for it like Day of Defeat.

The game Counter Strike is a mod(ification) on an older game called half-life and it uses all te half-life engines. (Computational algorithims imbeded in the software that helps the computer track bullet trajectories and such as close to actual physics as possible to ensure that "kills" are accurate)
You can either buy Half-life and dl the CS mod from www.counter-strike.net or you can buy the CS game as a standalone and have the cd incase anything ever goes wrong (my prefered choice)
As for how to play online games. When you first start up the game and are taken to the introduction menu click the "Play CS" label and from that menu then click the "internet game" option. This will take you to their servers where you can then wither join or create games. I recommend that you only join unless you have an extra computer to use as the server. Playing on the server computer is highly un-recommended unless you have about a quadrillion megs of ram and like 12 processors.
