    Cable modem

I just purchased a cable modem at Circuit City and AT&T will be here next week to install it. What I want to know is how much of a difference will I see compared to my 56k dial up connection. Is really that significant. I only switched because I got such a good deal on the service. I saw a demo at the store and the salesman said mine will be even faster.
Since you can't beat me on the field, why don't you beat me off!!!

The difference will be amazing. What used to take me 15 mintues to download now take only 3 SECONDS!!!!! I am not kidding, it take about 3 seconds for me download stuff. Based on how big the file is. The longest I have ever had to wait for a download was 1 mintue. That was a 30 meg file! You will never go back to dial up. If you play games online, you probably experienced latency (aka lag) which makes the game run slow or everything off. With a cable modem there is so little you can barely notice. You will enjoy it, it is worth it.

CABLE RULES MAN, until of course....it crashes and wont work, because the wang worshipping cable company is "working on their lines" or something like that.

Cable is a mixed blessing. Unlike DSL, cable is a network with other users in your area. If there are a lot of them downloading that new Ricky Martin video from Morpheus, then your connection speeds will suffer. To a greater or lesser extent DSL is not hit as bad by these problems since it is what is known as a point to point protocol(I think thats what its called).

I have had both, I know for example that I don't get on the internet between 5 and 7 PM, because its frustrating, and not just for cable users, everyone slows down, and if you don't believe that then get a program called VitalAgent and it will tell you where the slow down occurs. Remember you are only as fast as the slowest point.

            Just my .02 worth.
That which does not kill us, cripples us for life.

Hmmm. Is there a diff between cable modem and 56k modem? Only the same difference between a jumbo 747 and a Concorde. They both get you to the same place but one gets you there a hella lot faster.

MAgdude -Optimum is right. It's not their system, it's your cmop. The fiber optics that have been laid down by Optimum are capable of easily supporting a corporate T3 lan connection.

there are two reason why you would experience a loss of perfomance. The first is the increase of users on the network which will always slow things down. ust a bit mind you, not a ton.

The second is your chipset. Come on man. 400Mhz vs and 1.8Ghz chip? No comparison. Of course your friends computer is going to be faster. It can process the information coming off the LAN much faster than your 400 chipset.

Upgrade amigo! I now have a 633 chip and am upgrading to a dual 1.0Ghz board with dual Intel 0r AMD chipsets and 2 gigs ram.
