i have the same modem and the same router. i mostly play cfs2 and ut and have no problems. here are some things to check:

sometimes having your gaming computer in the DMZ helps alot, but it leaves that box vulnerable to hacking.

if dmz is undesirable to run servers you must have DHCP disabled and each box must be assigned a static ip address and a port range for each game must be forwarded. if you only join games and dont host dont worry about this. a list of game ports can be found somewhere here: http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto...ind-router.asp

somewhere else on the site it mentions removing and reinstalling your network protocols which will force a rebuild of the tcp ip stack and this sometimes solves a lot of problems.

the first week i had my network up i was losing internet connections and having to reset my router 2 times a day, after i undid and redid my bindings and removed reinstalled my protocols my problems cleared right up. my network has been good for months(knock on wood), not gloating at all, just trying to reassure you that you will get this straightened out.

Also, I don't usually make servers, just join them. I think I tried resetting somethings about 2 months ago and nothing worked..

i dont use aim unfortunately and its not something i can just walk you through quick, which im sorry about because believe me it really sucks not to be able to get your game on and id like to see you up and fraggin.

try having your dad or yourself totally taking out the router and going back to just modem, and then reinstall the router from scratch, that may help. dont worry about all the other crap i spewed before if you dont host the games.

if you run virusscan or a firewall program, disable them while you are gaming.

the router is probably responsible for the packet loss and im sure its just a configuration thing. re installing everything may help.

another thought is this, as more and more subscribers get cable internet, the network gets bogged down. i notice my activity light is on non stop now, but a few years ago when i signed up it would hardly blink.

that homenethelp site has a lot of good info that may help as well as some tutorials

I've tried setting the DMZ host for him before, maybe i was doing it wrong. We've narrowed it down to the router itself... it was a while ago so i'm not positive, but i think everytime there was packet loss a certain light would blink on the router, and of course the techies don't know crap.

We're trying it again tonight, thanks for your help. I'll let you know how it works out.

I think that the host computer isn't set up as the host, and that the one on wireless is. I'm going over tomorrow to see.

sounds like the exact same setup as mine:
sb3100 modem
befw11s4 router with 4 port switch and wireless ap
one machine wired to router, the other with a linksys usb wireless adapter.

which box is wireless??, if the gaming box is thats the problem right there, speeds will vary and not be as good as advertised.

you should have a peer to peer network, so each machine is a host and a client.

whichever machine boots up first will be the master browser for the network, this will have no effect on internet though.

try pinging each machine from the other and see what your times are and how much packet loss.

try pinging your isp or automags.org and see the same. times should be less than 10ms, packet loss should be 0

theres nothing you can really do except get the latest drviers for your network card, router and tht goes with your dad's comp as well...

if that dosn't work, call your cable provider, it could be your network settings. I'm not a network engineer so thats as much as i can tell you.

The gaming computer is mine, the one with the cable modem. My dad's upstairs is using my cable modem via router. The router is on my computer though and he has some thing that recieves the info upstairs. Hope that helps..

ok DMZ apparently does nothing, we're gunna take the thing out and completely reinstall it. What is this peer to peer network you were talking about and how would we go about setting that up?

peer to peer is what you have set up already, i was just stating at any given time each computer can act as client or server(host).

feel the rt mentioned driver updates, there may be a firmware revision for your router available. www.linksys.com will list any updates and how to flash the router. not for the faint of heart.

try uninstall/reinstall first though.
