I play bass, first I had a cheap (but alright) Jackson 4-string. Horrible pickups, I replaced the P with a basslines. A few months ago I got my Fender 5-string jazz bass, aw its beautiful and I love the deep b-string.
any guitar players?

I started playing guitar when I was 15 (that's 25 years ago!) I've got a Gibson LP Std, Gibson ES-135 semi-hollowbody, G&L ASAT and a Guild D35 w/a Fishman transducer. My favorite amp is a Mesa/Boogie Studio22+ w/ an extension 1-12 cab. I also have a couple small Fender silverface amps.
25 years and I STILL suck!

Don't get a Fender. You can get a ESP, Jackson, or Kramer for the same price as a Fender and the quality will be 10 times better. There's a rumer that Fender has been using crappy wood on their guitars. If you like the Fenders go ahead and get one but I personally wouldn't.Centerflag Hyperflow 201 For Sale!

About Fender's...
There are Fender's, and there are Fender's! They run the full spectrum of quality and price. Like everything else in this world, you get what you pay for. The American series are all really good instruments. The Mexican built ones are a good value, but it will be reflected in the resale value. Same with the Taiwan and Chinese (same thing?) ones.
Myself, I love the sound and feel of strats. The only problem is the location of the knobs. I turn them down while playing with the heel of my hand.. I guess I just got used to playing a Les Paul style Carvin when I was a kid. The ASAT is patterned after a Tele. I really like that guitar, although the pick-ups are a bit too hot for my tastes. I prefer a more "vintage" tone. It's bright sounding, "spanky" if you will. It will drive the front end of low gain amps real nicely. Swamp ash body, maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, and a perfectly executed cherry sunburst finish...yeah, I like that one!
Check out the G&L's!

Hehe, I was gonna say, check out G&Ls! Thing is, you have to be careful what you buy. Now if you don't care, it doesn't matter, but if you do:
Fender I heard for some time was using a 'swimming pool route' technique where instead of routing holes for all three pickups, they just routed out a massive cavity for all three. This of course affects tone. I also heard that G&L started doing this, but I am not sure which models may have and which may not. but dude, if you are thinking about a fender...
make your own! Seriously, thats what I did...I got a beat up guitar, used the neck and made a body, bridge, and installed some new electronics in it. It is my main practice guitar. It was a lot of fun to build
I have played for about 4 years...and looking for a band, hehe. I own a Warrior Soldier 6-string, Gibson SG, Taylor 12, Custom strat, Ibanez acoustic, and a cheap Silvertone classical(which is a rad guitar!
)
Dude, we should go shopping for guitars one day. I mean, I live pretty near you I guess, you are up in Fairfax and I am in Haymarket(or the markets-of-hay as we like to call it)
Nice to know there are some other guitarists around here.
Cphillip-I was thinking of a Martin 12 string, thing was, they're so hard to find in left-handed!
