    Respect

We've all heard the saying "Respect your elders". I tend to think that most of us follow that rule, to a degree. If you're walking into the store and you step in front of an elderly couple, i notice more often or not, that people will open the door for them. This is showing respect. I can go on but i'm sure you get the picture.

I'm 20 years old. I don't dress like a thug or anything, but i think i look like a normal kid. I wear baggy jeans, a hat, t-shirt, i have a tounge ring, yadda yadda yadda. I would never disrespect someone that i never knew without a reason. I'm always first to show them that i'm a respectable person. Yet all the time older people assume i'm some punk kid just because i don't look like an "adult". For example, i was in a deli this morning getting something to drink and there was a small aisle i was walking through to get to the counter. This guy is also walking through the same aisle, i would say he was in his mid thirties. It was a fairly small aisle so there was no way we both could get through. I stepped back so he could pass and he kept going. As he got closer, he looked at me with winced eyes. I saw the look and just brushed it off. I was about to walk through when he pretty much stopped and turned to look at whatever he was getting. I politely said "excuse me" so that i could get through. He looked at me and moved half an inch forward where he could have moved more so that i could get through. I had to almost climb on the shelf to get through. Obviously annoyed, i brushed him and kind of pushed him forward with a sarcastic "Oh, i'm sorry".

Like i said, i tend to show people older than i, the first sign of respect. Why is it that these same people feel that they have to go and disrespect us, simply because of our age? Because we're young means that we don't need to be treated respectfully? I understand in certain instances, some punk kid tries wising off to people all the time, but does that mean you have to go ahead and generalize a whole generation because of a few bad eggs? It just seems to me that while those of us that do try to respect our elders, get disrespected for our efforts. Any comments and views welcome.

This is what i don't understand about people. Why would you form such a negative judgement about someone so quickly based on nothing? Ok, some kid goes driving down your neighbor hood with the flashy rice burner and his system pounding as loud as it can go, i could understand. Some jerk trying to show off something he probably recieved from his parents anyways. Even if you have your initial judgement on someone, does that mean you won't give them a chance to at least prove that they're not stupid or disrespectful?

It just seems like discrimination to me. Basing an opinion about someone before you know them about something that they are, in this case young. Now forming those first judgements on their apperance i can understand. Disregarding that person entirely from that sole judgement, before you even know anything about the person, i think is just wrong. In certain situations i could probably understand, such as the one i listed earlier. I just can never agree with incidents like at the store and so on.

Langrage-I really don't dress like a punk, or thug, ect. I hang out with all those kinds of people and i don't wear anythinig close to what they do. I don't smoke so i don't go around smelling like a pool hall, no chains, backwords hat, my pants are around my waist, dont' walk with a limp, no tatoo's, extravagent hair, ect. People ignoring me shows a great sign of disrespect to me. If what i did makes me a "punk kid" when he straight up passed me off, then i guess i am a "punk kid". I refuse to go out of my way to respect someone if no sooner they would ____ on me. I just can't do it. People think that they've earned and deserved respect without having to dish some out. I just can't agree with that.

ok i have a few... er ok maybe a little more than a few things to add to this

Desrimination by location (i rhymed!) thats what i get a lot when im traveling. I get called redneck racist etc etc.... some of those i dont mind being called but cmon just because im from the south doesnt mean i hate every one who isnt white... same for other places around the US just because your from california or the west coast doesnt mean your a stuck up person or whatever yall get called i dont really know

some times people are in bad moods in a hurry etc they somtimers forget to be respectful and polite remember this before you get mad at them and if some does disrespect you for no reason (like if your both abvout the same age and are similar in style and dress) dont let it get to you and brush it off knowing your better than them

and if a older person disrespects you because you dress a certain way listen to rap, rock techno etc ask politly for an apology and still show them respect no matter what or how hard it is

                    ok im done

half my life ago i was a punk kid. i used to have long hair, leather jacket always wore jeans and a black t shirt. had a pierced ear. thats nothing now, it was actually something then. but i was in style for my group(heavy metal, gear head, recreational partyer, musician). people used to lock their car doors as i skateboarded down main street past them. i hated people for stereotyping me, it happened all the time, in public places, at work, on job interviews etc.i sincerely didnt understand it. now twice as old i constantly have to stop myself from making snap judgements about people based on appearances, and i find myself doing it more often, even though i know better. part of getting older, and that generation gap thing i never understood. i do catch myself and step back. at least i notice im doing it i guess.
                      life is strange

I'm a punk, but I'm not a disrespectful person, actually sometimes I'm overly polite lol, but I don't really get alot of disrespect, maybe cuz I don't pay alot of attention cuz I don't really care lol

Well, I'm polite and I respect people. The thing is, I will step up and challenge an adult if I am compelled enough.

                          An example:
I have started to lose respect for my parents because they are far too restrictive over me. I try to reason with them and talk to them about certain issues but they always blow me off like I'm some sort of punk or I don't know anything. I try other methods like making them contradict themselves or bring an idea slowly but they always kill whatever I try to do by saying "You don't know what you're talking about. We are older and we know more so you should just shut up." or any variant of that, always including shut up somewhere in the phrase.

I'm not respecting my parents as much but I'm still polite towards them. I believe in certain things strongly and if anyone challenges my beliefs I will try to educate them. I've never gotten bad looks from many adults but I have gotten negative attitude... I hang out with a lot of punk friends... Damn nice people, I walk around my school campus and our school security will go to our group more if we're walking around. Then when I hang out with my other friends, preppy girls and hip hop/dance guys(none are on dance team though), the security or teachers don't give a crap about us... I just find that strange.

                          .
