We've all heard the saying "Respect your elders". I tend to think that most of us follow that rule, to a degree. If you're walking into the store and you step in front of an elderly couple, i notice more often or not, that people will open the door for them. This is showing respect. I can go on but i'm sure you get the picture.
I'm 20 years old. I don't dress like a thug or anything, but i think i look like a normal kid. I wear baggy jeans, a hat, t-shirt, i have a tounge ring, yadda yadda yadda. I would never disrespect someone that i never knew without a reason. I'm always first to show them that i'm a respectable person. Yet all the time older people assume i'm some punk kid just because i don't look like an "adult". For example, i was in a deli this morning getting something to drink and there was a small aisle i was walking through to get to the counter. This guy is also walking through the same aisle, i would say he was in his mid thirties. It was a fairly small aisle so there was no way we both could get through. I stepped back so he could pass and he kept going. As he got closer, he looked at me with winced eyes. I saw the look and just brushed it off. I was about to walk through when he pretty much stopped and turned to look at whatever he was getting. I politely said "excuse me" so that i could get through. He looked at me and moved half an inch forward where he could have moved more so that i could get through. I had to almost climb on the shelf to get through. Obviously annoyed, i brushed him and kind of pushed him forward with a sarcastic "Oh, i'm sorry".
Like i said, i tend to show people older than i, the first sign of respect. Why is it that these same people feel that they have to go and disrespect us, simply because of our age? Because we're young means that we don't need to be treated respectfully? I understand in certain instances, some punk kid tries wising off to people all the time, but does that mean you have to go ahead and generalize a whole generation because of a few bad eggs? It just seems to me that while those of us that do try to respect our elders, get disrespected for our efforts. Any comments and views welcome.
