Well I finaly got a better home connection. Put in Starband and finaly got my network set up last night. Now I got four computers online at all times and the phone line is free to use as well. After many years of dial up out here in the "Sticks" I am getting pretty fast connection for change. I was doing a blazing 26.4K up until now.
First impressions? Well it is certainly fast. Downloads are great. Uploads are a bit slow but there are ways around some of that. Still much MUCH faster than dial up. If I had to guess its sort of like half of 3/4 as fast as DSL/Cable down loading and about 1/4 as fast uploading. But that is screaming compaired to my old dial up.
For instance I could try and download Eudora from our University site at dial up and it would take like 2-3 hours. Took less than 2 minutes with Starband.
But it's not for everyone. If you can get DSL or Cable then by all means do it. If your like me and have no other choice it's a nice option. Well...it's the ONLY option! Kind of expensive. Install is like $800 and its $69 a month. Plus you have to dedicate one computer as the incoming "gateway" because of the software needing to translate the sattelite language back into DCHP but that is not too big an inconvience. But that one has to stay on all the time for the clients to be online too.
So I may even be able to start thinking of joining the chat things and being around for the contests now. Never an option before. Too slow and the kid always had the phone line at nights. Whoopie!
