Actually, I started doing that just before being deployed! I had my 9 yo nephew out in the woods w/me, teaching him how to read a compass, track, etc. It was a great time spent. Man, now i miss him!

I'd love to try Geocaching, but I need to pick up a GPS first. Any recommendations from the seasoned geocachers?

Go with the yellow Garmin Etrex one. Its affordable, and does everything you need it to do. Dont go out and buy one with all the fancy shmancy stuff....most of it you'll never use. Another useful tool when you get it is the Garmin Mapsource program. With it you can plot points onto the map, then print it. I use both of them...not so much now, but I will when I finish here. They work great together.

Sounds pretty cool. I might pick a GPS up this summer to do that.

                  Well Geocaching is rather simple.

Someone goes and hides stuff in the woods or in the city and post the map cords to find it.

The person enters the cords into the GPS and tries to find the stuff.

Its not the stuff your really looking for its the cache. The stuff is just for fun and typically not very expensive. Whats really important is that #1 you LOG your visit, #2 if you take something you put something back in. #3 Cache in and Trash out help keep the woods clean and try not to carve a trail a blind dwarf could follow

It more aboutthe hunt that the "treasure" because most of it is junk. Every now and then you find something you like or tickles your fancy. eg. I picked up a cd of Organ music and a bean baby, I intern left a few things like a whistle, bubbles, match box cars.

As for units. I have a Garmin http://www.garmin.com GPS ///+ and I like it a lot. I should have gotten the V as it has some extra features that add accuracy. Those are higher end units. They have a full line of toys for just about every budget. I am friends with a garmin dealer I will talk to him and see if he is intrested in carrying some more product and selling it to people on the forums.

I can't believe the timing on this! I just learned of geocaching today.

I had read an article about this lady from alaska who lives in europe. She works for a circus and hypnotizes chickens and has them play the piano.

Anyway, her mode of transportation was a bike (an expensive one at that ~$1800). She was in a consignment store trying on clothes, and when she came out of the dressing room, she found that one of the employees thought her bike was for sale and sold it for like $12.

What does this have to do with geochaching? Well, today there was a follow up article about some engineers in texas who had raised a little money to send over to her...sorta help her get a new bike. It was mentioned in the article that these guys said they would be more interested in someone who hypnotizes chickens than a normal person. One of the guys is building a submarine in his garage and two others enjoy the sport of geocaching! THAT's when I thought to myself, "hmmmmm what's that?"

So just within the last 45 minutes, i have been out on geocaching.com learning all sorts of cool stuff about it. I pop on over here to browse the forums and WHAM! a thread about it.

I'm so pumped. I could really get into this....I love stuff like this.

How many E.P.'s do you get for finding a cache?
