    card for USB?

    This is a pretty lame question but...is it possible to buy a card with a USB port that I can put into an empty card slot in my computer? All the USB ports I've seen are part of the computer but the computer I use at work doesn't have one and I'd like to be able to use my digital camara and my CD burner with it. Any help would be most...helpful.

              One thing to add, if you have all USB 1.1 ports on your computer, this is also a way to get a USB 2.0 port. You can buy a USB 2.0 card and put it into your computer.

              USB 2.0 transfers data at about 480 mb/s whereas 1.1 is about 11-12mb/s

              To do a comparison, Firewire is 400mb/s, so 2.0 is 80 mb faster.

              Just a FYI. (USB 2.0 cards are sometimes between $30-40. Depends where your buying them, your local Best Buy should have it for $40 I think. If I remember correctly, I quit about 3 months ago.)

                  USB 2.0 isnt really that fast. You cant say that USB 2.0 is faster just cuz its technically capable of transfering that fast.

                  Find me a raid array that can transfer at 480 mb/s. OK...that mighta been a little tough, now tell me anything you can plug into a USB port that can...IMPOSIBLE SENOR

                      I have an Adaptec USB 2.0 4 port card ( 3 external 1 internal ) and it has worked great with all my 1.1 stuff. I needed the extra ports because teh VIA chipset has a usb problem when you pass through a hub. So for liek $45 or so I picked this up and its worked well...

                      Firewire is way better than USB2, it better all around in how it handles data. Problem being is that Apple screwed teh pooch in how it did the license and its royalties.

                          For USB 2.0, from working at Best Buy I learned the "Capabilities" of the device, might not be it's speed on older, or even newer devices/computers. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was saying that you'll always get these amazing speeds, it's just what it's capable of when maxed out. It's like a video card, you can get a GeForce 4 with 128mb of ram on it, but your not going to see much of a difference when you plug it into your 400mhz Celeron.

                          Hope that clears that up a little bit. I actually have no need for USB 2.0, so I can't say how good/bad it performs, I just know the capabilities. I have all my stuff internal.

                              Well 12mbit/s for usb 1 is a lil slow. And as time goes on speeds will get up there. It's good to pick a fast transport.

                              And it would't be all that hard to come up with a RAID that could push 480mbit/s That's only 60MByte/s. Still less than even LVD SCSI.
