when i do that, using 1024x768, it ranges from 0 to the mid 20's but averages about 16. on 640x480, it ranges from the 20's to the 40's.
Also, how come i can run windows in 1280x1024, but i cant get quake to run anything over 1024x768?Classic RT - RT02667

Benchmarks and 3d gaming differes from the 2d enviroment of your OS (operating System) if yer only getting 0-20 FPS on 1024*768... run it on 800*600. Also if you get such slow fps on 1024*768 the game may be protecting from over working your vid card and cpu on 1280*1024. You have to remember... in games..there's a lot more info being compiled on that 1024*768 screen then in your OS (Windows) Its harder for the computer to calculate in depth changes at larger resolutions. Its kinda like biting off more than you can chew!
I have a PIII 450 with 256mb RAM, TNT2 32MB nvidia card (AGP2x) and I get about 55 fps on the onscreen fps meter. Sometimes (depending on map) it may drop to like 40. Thats at 1024x768. If I drop it to 800*600 I get about 20-25 more fps. I have a large chunk of ram allocated to q3 and CS (120 mb

im getting a better vid card(G3 Ti500, or G4 MX440), some more ram, and mabey a new HDD soon so hopefully that will help. i might just build a new comp, and use the processor(1.2 Athlon), CD drives, and some other stuff from the one i got now.Classic RT - RT02667
