chameleons are awesome. they do very poorly in captivity, even with enormous expensive terrariums. many dont last more than a few years. when i was into herpetology with my brother we were considering it but the books we had recommended against it. we made our own terrariums. we had a 4x4x3 rainforest with a pond and a running waterfall and a 4 x 2.5 x 2.5 desert that stayed 90-100 degrees all the time.

about the mealworms: no, its fun to watch them go after moving food, especially crickets. mealworms dont move much. try bugs you find around the house too.

I'd recommend against that, especially if you have Orkin spray your house..

i thought i read some where that the meal worms can burro out of the lizard...i dunno if its true

my gecko isnt eating or drinking yet, i just got him today. I'm guessing he prolly just ate today @ the pet store.
The women @ the pet store said feed about 3 meal worms every 3 days, does that sound about right?
        thanks for the info

Since anoles are wild around here i used to catch them and keep them for a while then let um go.One time before we went on a vacation to the mainland I caught a bunch of geckos and sold them to a pet store. If you want a really cool pet get an octopus. There so mean. They are the smartest of all mollusk or celophods or whaterver phylum they are from. I had three one time in different tanks and found out how smart they are. I knew they would try to get out of there tanks so i made extra sure to block every exit. I cut plexiglass pieces to block up every space where the filter was and anyways I kept them in my moms old art studio next to my house. Well one morning i went to check on them and all three were out of their tanks. I found two of them in the corner but I couldnt find the other one so i found its tracks{slimy octopus with eight legs leaves a funny looking track on a linolium floor}leading to the door and then out the door downt the stairs and into the dirt outside. I swear that damn thing was waiting for me next to the door so when i opened the door it could get out. Anyways they are really fun to watch cause their almost always changing colors.

Meal worms will have a hard time burroing through anything after your lizard chews them up! leave 'em live they will gor for them more readily. After they are eating good yo can do canned ones in a pinch.

Make sure the worms are the right size for the lizard. Small lizards need the smaller (standard size, not giant or super) worms. Feed as many as he'll eat right away every few days (3 ever 3 days sounds right to start).

Get a good book and read it.

My mom is allergic to them also. My little bro had hermit crabs, which i am not going to get started on those, and now he has lepoard geckos. He spent a ridiculous amount on the first 1, then bought 2 at petco because they had to many and were cheap. They are boring. He likes them though.

                  1 question.
should i cut the heads off the meal worms before feading them to him?
                  thanks
It may be fun, but my bro's gecko almost died b/c the meelworms eat away at their insides if they aren't dead. He now buys waxed ones or cuts the heads off

My friend Josh had a 3-4' Iguana, and it could be nasty.

He handled it a lot, but it would be grumpy sometimes, and those tails hurt.

One time in particular, I remember Josh took it out of the terrarium he built for it, and he didn't have a shirt one. Needless to say, 5 minutes later it looked like Josh had gotten about 50 lashes from a leather whip. A 1.5 foot tail covered in scales and little spikes will leave some marks on bare skin.

Get a snake, they are cooler than lizards, and most of them don't mind being handled at all.

yes, if you enlist the services of an exterminator dont feed the lizard household bugs. in cali and hawaii and tropical areas people let geckoes free in the home to eat unwanted insects, so other than pesticides this is not a concern. i have owned many many lizards and never had a problem.generally if they shouldnt eat it, they are smart enough not to. and i hold 2 pesticide licenses one applicator and one supervisory so i can speak freely on this.you can buy powdered vitamins and shake em in a bag with the crickets or mealworms coating them with the powder.the two biggies are UV light and a heat rock so the lizard can digest his food.
remember,in the wild no one monitors a geckoes diet, or decapitates his prey and they have survived on their own as a species quite successfully.

toss an iguana in water..its awesome..they can swim. they swim good too..make sure you keep them under light on one side of the cage and some shade in the other..of you can put a heat rock in it. those work kool.
