    Uniforms/Common Dress... Your opinions...

Well, ever scince I was in 4th grade, I have been forced to wear uniforms, all the way up to 8th grade, finaly I get to high school, and NO MORE UNIFORMS!!! YAY!!! But ya, that was last year, now this year the school has decided to goto common dress(uniforms).

Now, they say, it will allow for a more orderly, healthy, safe, and educational learning enviroment. My question is, was the environment without uniforms realy that bad? Last year may have been the best year of school ever, no fights, no getting picked on, tons of friends, partys, dances and people that actualy danced with me. I never got picked on once for what I was wearing, and I did have nice clothes most of the time, Fubu, Mecca, Hard Knocks, pretty much a bunch of Rap/Hip Hop brands, because they were cool? No, becasue they actualy fit me comfortably, its hard to find clothes that fit me loosly and not all tight, because I am big(back player, go figure) But sometimes I just wore some clothes from K-Mart or Wal-Mart. Because they fit comfortably, hell I'v gone to school days in some sweats and a old T-shirt. Nobody said anything. I only got a couple, "didn't you wear that yesterday?", which I did, so I said yes. Because I didn't care, my other clothes were dirty or I didn't feel like wearing something else.

Now, what will uniforms do to realy help the school? I already proved that there is pretty much no trouble with getting made fun of. Mabe it might stop some girls from wearing revealing clothing... but think about it. If you see a fine girl(or guy for you girls, or ummm, different people) won't you look, and admire them despite what they are wearing, I know if I saw Britney Spears or any hot girl sitting somewhere, I wouldn't care if she was wearing a swim suit or a Big, granny dress... I would check her out no matter what. And, seriously have any of you ever just stood there staring at a girls shirt for an entire class, anyone that stupid to be doing that will do it no matter what the girl is wearing. I think its pretty much to get rid of distractions for the teachers. And it may cause a little less time picking out what you are going to wear.

Now think about the bad that it does, I already proved taht it will pretty much not do any good for anyone. But think of it like this, is a couple less people checking someone out, or getting made fun of realy worth taking away everyone's RIGHT, to wear what they choose? Just because we are younger, we don't deserve to wear what we choose? Some of you older people here will say,"Do you think an employer will let you wear what you want to?" Well, all I have to say, am I getting paid to goto school, do I have costomers to impress with my looks? I think not. I just know my parents had to spend $500+ on new clothes for me for next year because the school is ignorant.

Do they realy think that a collared shirt and some black pants will realy stop these people from fighting? I don't know about you but if someone is starting a fight with me, I'm not going to run away because they are wearing some preppy clothes. 8th grade may have been the worse year of school ever for me. Getting picked on, getting beat up, getting bugged constantly, and all this was at a school with uniforms. Didn't help that school much. There were more fights there than there are in high school, and there are 2 times as many people there.

I also feel that, if one day I feel like wearing a red, blue, green or pink shirt, I should be able to without having to listen to crap from teachers and administrators, because someone is in a gang and wears gang colors, I should be punished and have my rights taken away? I just know if any teacher says anything about anything I wear, I will snap and they will get the yelling at of their life and they will wish they never said anything.

Well enough with my rambling, what are your oppinions?
You smell like dookie... No really though.

I feel your paint man. Had to wear those damned things for uhh... 2-3 years in HS. Hated every minute of it. Hell, we couldn't even have LOGO'S on our shirts! Pretty stupid, eh? Oh,and here comes the doosy...
We got a new super-intendant around my freshman year & this guy decides that having withces, & goblins n' such on the walls for decoration around halloween is a BAD thing. Frickin' dumb-***. This guy's a moron & he's got some serious wang stuck up his arse. The funny thins is, the majority of the parents in said school system think the guys an idiot as well.

But what can you do when your stuck in the bible belt?
I'm way too old for this ****.

OK, ever since 5th grade, i have had to wear some sort of uniform. In 5-8 grades i had to wear either a colloared shirt with a tie or a turtle neck, both with a blazer and kakai pants, and dress shoes. In 9th and 10th i had to wear a collared shirt, a tie, dress slacks and nice shoes. In 9 and 10 it has been a little better, as it is a dresscode other than a uniform like before. Well down here in chile i have a uniform even, its easier tho, blue jeans, wth a white pollo, and a blue sweatchirt, with black shoes.

I will also tell you i am a big person. I dont like it. as for casual dress, i wear what i would to skate (inline) or snowboard. A hoodie (i have like 12 of em!) and a pair o baggieish jeans.

As for uniforms, i dunno, i miss dressing freely, but if you have some imagination and you really look into it, it is the same as being without a uniform. If people cannot express them selves through their clothing the way they want, they will try to do it in a suttle manner. I kno i do. LEts take shoes. Does everyone wear wing tipped shoes with their uniform? NO! there are some, but i personally pimp it in a pair of DR martens!

People will also express them selves with bigger or smaller or brand name dresspants, cargo or non cargo, the way you wear your shirt even. iIts all the same, just not as flashy.

Also, i noticed, alot of people turn to their bookbag for expression. Unless you got one of em clear ones, you can put all sorts of patches and stuff on there.

As for picking on, i noticed in a tighter uniform instance, i got made fun of more, why? because no one can make fun of yuor clothes. but there is another reason...

Admit it, people dont like the fat kid, atleast as a kid. Also, when we are being made fun of, we say stupid things, and try to fit in. we try to hard. i think as i got older i noticed i became more popular. i also matured. i also found out who my real friends were, the people who care who you are, not what you look like. the people i found like the same stuff i do. i feel that you matured in this year. im sorry you have to go back to dress code, but there isnt any thing you can do. trust me, i tried!

the thing i like here, is the dresscode is so simple. And with diff jeans, and diff shoes, you seem diff from every one else.

I hope you can catch my drift of the stuff i say.

Ya, we can't have logo's either, I guess they don't want some people to have a Nike symbol while others have a Wal-Mart brand symbol

they even told us what kind/color undershirts we could wear...

I just hope that this dosent turn all the teachers into Nazis like the teachers in my old school, all day all I would hear is, Tuck in that shirt, give me that shirt, take off those shoe laces, you can't wear that

it sucked bad...my old vice pricipal(who everyone hated, even told one of the councilors that wearing his sox the way he was, suggesting he was a gangster(they were not knee high, or ankle socks, they were normal, and somehow that=gangsters

thats pretty messed up if it was that strict, but im sure you willb e ok, and il bet you the teachers are pretty leinient, because peolpe wills ee how far they can get, and if one person sees it it is automatically ok, there fore another dows it and so on, they will prolly tell you it is un acceptable, but people will continue to do it, it happens all the time at my school

cargos were like outlawed, but every one continused to wear em

I know you already brought this point up, but it is a valid one that should not be thrown aside so easily: you will not be wearing what you want when you get a job.

It depends on how you look at highschool. You, clearly, are still in it, and probably see it as a mix between socializing, learning, and just a place to spend the day. People no longer in school, who have seen what happens to those who do not come into the real world prepared, often see school as training. Not just in rote memorization of facts, but in study habits, formality, mature interpersonal relationships between you and your superiors, and a general introduction to the real world.

You will never get sympathy from me over more rules in public education that mimic the real world. Yeah it may suck now, so does math, but that doesn't mean it wont help you out later. One thing I have noticed is just feeling comfortable in a mature, buisness environment will give you a HUGE advantage over others in the few years after you graduate high school.

Well, I still managed to get some realy nice clothes that I liked luckily. once again, alot of fubu, mecca, hard knocks, and so on And I found ways to personalize my stuff and stay within the rules. So acutaly, I realy didn't lose much of my style, durin all this, I actualy picked up some better style. I ditched the half skater, half gangster look, now I pretty much looks like a prep kinda gangster But ya, its a weird look but its cool, and comfortable. Hahaha, and my slick new Ghetto Industries wallet is sickness... I stuck my team logo and an 888paintball sticker on there I'm gonna try to find some patches and stuff for my backpack and stuff. And yes, I also noticed that I did mature alot this last year for some odd reason. Probably because I relized I just have to be myself to get friends and I also learned alot about life, and how it works...

I do agree w/ restola on a certain level, but that's a whole 'nother can o' worms, that I don't even wanna open right now.

The biggest problem w/ dress-code in my school was that atleast 50% (seriously) of the teachers were more concerned with the dress-code, than they were with actually teaching. And hte majority of it was small stuff, like someones shirt bing "bloused", or someone not wearing a belt, or even better, someone having a Stripe on the INSIDE of their collar. Pretty farked up, eh?... Oh well, no more of that bs for me

Iv always worn whatever I wanted to school, but when I moved to Flordia, I had to wear a collard shirt and a belt and have the shirt tucked in, I hated it so much, I always got denetion because I didnt have a belt or have the shirt tucked in, but that was in 8th grade. Now in highschool I have no dress code and love wearing whatever I feel like wearing.

I know a few years ago when I was still in Highschool they were going to try and make people where uniforms. I never thought that it would be that bad cause you gotta figure that it's only for like 7 hours or so that you gotta where them. Like Jonno a whole big group of us said that if that did happen that they couldn't put all of us in detention, especially if the whole school boycotted it. Ended up being declined since they didn't want another policy to enforce.

I was stuck in a uniform for 9 years of grammar school (K-8) and a dress code for 4 years of high school.

                              My opinion?

Uniforms are a pain in the rear, but better than "dress how you want". Dress codes are the best solution, though.

I think that a dress code stops most of the problems, allows people to still have thier own style and dress how they want and still gets the same effect as a uniform.

It seems the people who complain the most about uniforms and dress codes are the kids from public school who never had to wear them. Most of the guys I went to high school with who wore dress code all the time had absolutely no problem with it at all.

Just for the record, dress code at my school was pants, a shirt, a tie, and a jacket. You had a decent amount of flexibility within that code, though.
