    Lock picks

I am getting interested in lock picking, just for fun, and for other reasons... I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find the laws about lock picking in Illinois. I couldn't find any.

Just a guess, but if you're not a licensed locksmith, and not doing it to your own property, it is ILLEGAL.

I think this also applies in the US. That it is illegal to even own lockpicks unless you're a certified locksmith. It is up here in Canada.

I know that in most New England states you can have them in your home, or if you get a speeding ticket or something, and they find one, they can't do much. But if they see you breaking into a building or something with one, that is illegial.

I just want to know if anyone knows where to find the wording for Illinois

www.southord.com sells lockpick sets, I've got some out in the garage juts in case I lose the keys. Its legal to own them here in NE as long as, they're on your own property and you're not trying to break & enter.

first use a small screwdriver to torque the lock. you do this so when you push the pins up they stay in place. then get a small allenwrench, or a safety pin to push the pins in the cylender up. it is kinda easy, but not as much as they make it seam on tv. it just takes patience and pratice. if you listen you can hear teh pins that were in place, come out of place when you ease up on the screw driver.

Lock picking to enter a car is a waste of time. What you need is a 'slim jim'.

The CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) tow truck guys can open a car door in seconds with one of those. I lost my keys once (Fell out of my pocket playing paintball ) and had to call them. Two trucks arrived at the same time so they had a race. One driver jimmied the driver door the other did the passenger door. After seeing it done, you've got to wonder why you bother locking your doors.

Give me a bar (not not a huge crowbar, a hammer will do as well, but may be louder) and a screw driver I will be in your house in about 20 seconts.

the actual picking is the same technique.
a guy at my field locked his keys in his car and the aaa guy used an inflateable air blatter. he stuck it in the door jamb and inflated it enough to wedge the door open enough to hit the power locks with a rod

misfit, I know where to get the information on how to pick locks, and I've read a lot of it. I also know where to get the stuff. I just want to know if it is legal in Illinois.

                            Ford --

Like most things its probably "legal to own, but illegal to use" ... like cable/satellite converters ... "pipes" (Unless you really are using them for tabacco *L*) ... and so forth.

Most places will sell you regular lock picks without a problem, but they also sell Auto-Picks (looks like a gun with a trigger) and those do require a license of some kind to get.

I don't know how picking a lock that you own could be illegal. But who knows these days...

Lock picking isn't a simple task. There are usually five pins of varied lengths that you need to lift into the correct position. You will find this position by putting pressure on the lock by turning it with something like a allen wrench as previosly stated. You then need to lift the pins with a bobby pin or something similiar untill the pins catch on the ledge you create by applying turning pressure. If you listen very carefully you can hear it click into place. You do this with all 5 pins and you're in. To your OWN room that you locked yourself out of (of course)
