linksys seems to be the standard as far as joe-internet-users go. I had a great experience with their normal ethernet 4 port router.

I say go with linksys based on my experience with their products.

you could get a linksys befw11s4 cable/dsl router with 4 port switch and wireless access point and 2 pcmcia wireless linksys network cards(for the laptops). the modem is wired to the router and the router wired to your main box. the laptops will use the wireless side of the router.
i have 2 boxes(computers) at opposite corners of the house and 2 floors apart. (1900 square foot house)and the wireless machine comes in real high on all the internet speed tests. it works real nice. the machine in the basement is on a computer rack on casters and i can roll it anywhere in the house and be on the network. its awesome.
the routers are getting cheap <=150 $ for 11mbps wireless.
the cards for the laptops are @ 100$ each.

        SMC Barricade

SMC Barricade is supposed to be a good router. I have the one w/o the wireless. Check out www.practicallynetworked.com/. The have good reviews and make recommendations.

I had a problem accessing my corporate VPN with my Linksys router that went away when I changed to the SMC.
