she-yuh, I'll put that 120 refractor up against that 10 inch sonotube dobsonian for portability any day of the week. This new breaks down into a carry bag that's 36 inches long by 18 wide and tall. and it has shoulder straps to boot!

tell you what, my 20 inch Dobsonian is probably more portable and has twice the aperture of the meade. that's the whole reason people like me build truss style dobs in the first place. They break down into almost nothing, while hard tubed dobs can't. Once you get above about 14 inches in a tube dob it's unweildy as hell. I know, I lugged a 16 around for two friggin years until I saw the light... literaly!

meades and other sonotube dobs do have one big advantage though, the price to aperture ratio is amazing.

for about 550 you can get a state of the art 10 inch tube dob.

mine will cost you about 3 times that much.

Actually now that I take a good look at your borthers scope person, it looks like an EQ mounted reflector.

Oh, btw, the telrad is that black box looking piece on the end of the tube with the clear angled window on it.

it's used for aligning the scope before you look through the eyepiece.

If you look inside the telescope there is nothing there, but there is stuff at the bottom methinks, its just a tube

pretty much yeah, the tube is there just to keep the mirros at the correct distance(focal lenght) from each other and to align the optics.

there's a big primary mirror at the bottom, and a 4 vane "spider" at the top that holds the secondary mirror.

other than that, it's just a lot of air in there.
