COP is not rare by any means. I have to check this but I am almost positive GM has already begun using it. I may be mistaken only because I have not followed their product.
Basically what you are saying is what I was trying to describe in my terms as a coil pack. To my limited knowledge there would be little if any difference in performance other then the fact that coil packs as I said before have had a bad rep in reliability.
I will do some more checking and if you hear otherwise please let me know. I find both designs interesting and would like to find out why Ford has chosen COP.
